Any options for a place you can drive (legally) as fast as you want to?
I would really like to drive my car in a straight line and go as fast as it can go. Is there anywhere in the US where you can do that, like an old airport runway or something? I suppose legal issues make it unlikely. I don't want to race or go around in circles, I just want to open it up on a long straightaway.
Is there anywhere anyone knows of where this is possible with a stock car? (don't want to put in roll bars or something just for this dumb idea)
thanks for any ideas.

Go some standing mile events. I.e. Texas Mile or Arkansas Mile. You won't reach top end, but you'll get to run all out as many times as you want in a regulated event, and not worry about going to jail.
It's a good time.

Personally, I prefer road courses and some have nice, long straights, but sounds like you're looking for top speed. i'm in MI, and several organizations have 1/2 mile days on rather even, smooth runways (but you're not getting to absolute top speed on a 1/2 mile track). There's one I did recently with my Camaro. 2 day fun-run event, plenty of runs and I think it was about $180 if I remember correctly. Otherwise, 3am runs in "Mexico" are free. Every city and state has a "Mexico", but is it worth killing yourself, another driver or getting arrested and car impounded for going 175 on a 70mph freeway? Most say no, but some say yes, hence every area has its secret locations

Guy in town used to hold the overall record. Still holds the terminal velocity record I think at over 250 mph.
Looks like they have different classes.

Go to one of the longer road courses. They usually have some long straights that let you get up close to or over 150. Watkins Glen back straight is a 150+ mph straight if you have the ***** to run the Esses wide open. Once you can do that it is possible that you could get close to 160 before needing to brake. Just have to learn the fast line through the Esses and have the cajones to go through them with the pedal to the fiberglass. I hit 158 in my C6Z there. When you do it right it is a thrill and a half and really builds up an adrenaline rush that totally straight line can't even come close to. Very addicting being high on adrenaline.

These are all great ideas, thanks! I am new to all this. Just got the car of my dreams this summer after a lifetime of subpar driving experiences (toyota tercel, plymouth horizon, astro van, dodge neon). Never paid attention to events like these as I never had a car I would want to do this with. Lots here for me to research. thanks again for the ideas.

Welcome to our corner of the internet OP. We all understand how great it feels to finally get your dream car. Just keep in mind, as Bill mentioned, adrenaline highs are very addictive, (every time I get another set of tires I swear I'm done with track days). And as with most addictions, it gets expensive fast. Tires and brakes go much faster than you anticipate.

I have the same bug you do.
I took my little blue Vette to The Ridge Motorsport Park last Thursday an had a blast. As it was my first time on any track, I was more cautious than I'll be next time. That said, I got up to 131 on the long front straight.
Talking with one of the instructors afterwards, he said he'd been up to 150+ on that stretch by entering the straight faster and braking way later than I did. Going to have to work on my nerves for that.

I use to top out my cars for years on a little traveled parkway in NYS. The last car and time I did this was in 2002 in a new '02 Z06 Corvette. I hit 172 MPH indicated on the HUD. Love the rush, but I don't feel as lucky today as I did then. I wish there was a long straight stretch of road that I could legally top out my new Z06 close by Western NY. I wish this country had an Autobahn!!!!

Fortunately I have a relative with a private runway. It is 3/4 of a mile long. Smooth as silk. And 40 yards wide. That's one of many reasons I moved to my current location. Actually number one on list, but for my wife maybe down to 4th of 5th on her main reasons.

Route 60 between Vero Beach and Yeehaw Junction. 25 mile 4 lane divided highway to yeehaw junction (turnpike) nice road, longer than mulsanne straight, not alot of traffic almost no stoplights after Vero Beach.
