I changed the fluid on the diff in my '16 Z51. As others have reported it was underfilled from the factory, I got a scant 2 qts out of it. Otherwise it looked pretty clean and very little metal on the mag plugs. Refilled with Mobil 1 LS, took pretty much the full 3 qts. Good to go.
And not having to deal with a pumpkin cover and gasket? How clean and civilized is that? :-)
I plan on doing this over the weekend . Other than using a pump to get the new fluid into the diff fill plug , is there anything out of the ordinary to changing the fluid ? It looks like a simple drain and replace procedure. also , I assume refilling with Mobil 1 LS oil is ok? I know a lot of people say to use the OEM AC Delco Dexron LS oil.
Yes, just a simple drain and fill. The fill plug is a little tough to get at but I managed with a swivel head 3/8" driver. I was able to restart it by getting a finger from each hand up in there and get a couple turns on it before I used a tool. The drain plug is simple, reach across with a long extension.
The oil debate... I dunno, M1 has the same spec as GM, 75/90, LS additive, GL-5, although many here will say use only GM. I have always had good luck with this stuff in the past. YMMV.
Edit: Oh, as TexHawk reminds in another thread on this after initial fill and with the rear wheels off the ground run the car in gear for awhile. Then do a final top off. He said the procedure calls for 10 minutes. I ran mine about 3. This was very easy to do with my car lifted to the intermediate point on the Quickjack.
