OP on a new 2017 911 GTS
Don't expect miracles out of the new paint plant. I just spied this.

Well, if I have to explain that it exists on a $150K car painted in a state-of-the-art plant, and you don't understand the implications, I can't help you.

Also, from just a quick youtube search, the robots painting the 911 are a couple of generations old which means the booths likely are also older.
In reality, what would make a better paint job other than new equipment is less pressure from making production #s = less wear on the equipment, slower painting, longer flashoff, and more time spent on quality,

Perhaps I'm slow today, but what does OP stand for in the title of this thread?
On a forum, in my experience, it means Original Poster.
That doesn't seem to fit here.

Yea, everyone complains about OP, but tons of production cars have it. Much bigger things to worry about. Robots aren't going to solve this, getting OP gone means a lot of manual labor on each individual car. I think we're a long ways out before you see no OP on a mass produced car.

If you want something done right, you must do it yourlself my friend. If Porsche of today is anything like those of 20 yrs ago, there should be plenty of clear to wetsand that. But agree with you, no miracles expected, I'm sure the new 2019 will require the same elbow grease my brand new 2016 did.

Buddy, I have seen a panel painted in the new paint shop in person. I held the body panel in my hands. I took the panel into the light and moved it around in the sun, trying to see any sign of orange peel. I couldn't find any.......

Yep, I just started this thread as a little warm-up for the intense angst that will begin when the first cars show up in a few months.

Will be great if that is how it goes! I just wouldn't be the farm on a one panel sample compared to what starts coming out of the factory car after car.... That panel certainly could have received some additional attention....

You make a good point. Cars that cost double that of a base C7 don't necessarily have perfect paint. They too are mass produced and not all will be perfect. I realize some C7 owners have posted similar pictures showing paint defects from the factory which is really a Quality Control failure rather than a defective painting process.
My 2015 and now my 2018, both AW, have excellent paint jobs. OP is a bit harder to spot in the lighter colors. For most owners ,unless they have body shop/painting experience, would not be able to look at a C7 and find paint issues IMHO.
I just hope that future owners don't think the new paint line is going to make the OP 100% go away, because it will not. From the new paint line there will be less OP, probably fewer paint defects, and a more consistent product but it is not going to be magic.
Here is an irony.....many years from now when a C7 restoration is underway in preparation for a "concours d'Elegance" show, the C7 will not score well if it does not have some measure of OP as in the absence of Orange Peel it would not be "Factory Correct"..

Mike Furman said that Chevy is claiming an 80% reduction in OP with the new paint shop.

But if you do, as I did for 4 years while putting myself thru school, they aren't just noticeable, they scream out. Walking thru a dealership filled with brand new cars is a nightmare for me. You can't unsee that my friend.

Every profession has that type of "observance". Try working in Technology for over 25 years and watching TV shows like 24 that completely butcher what is and isn't possible. It's bad enough that they fake it, but then I have to explain to family and friends no, that's not possible and why.
