Default Front camera button?

How do you turn on the front camera for parking? Manual says you have to put it in reverse first, and then into drive (or 1st gear). It also says you can push the camera button on the center stack. but for the life of me I can't find in the manual where that button is.
How do you engage the front camera while parking?

it's on the 2nd screen, swipe from right to left

you can also long press it and move it to the main screen.

As Thunder noted you can move it to the main screen for easy access.

Then you will find that if you pushed it while still going 6 MPH it will flash a nag message that it cannot be engaged at that speed and will force you to push it again after you slow down further. Apparently it didn't dawn on the person who set up this programming that maybe it would be better to go ahead and pop the camera view up if the car slowed down to 5 MPH or below in the next 10 seconds rather than nag the driver AND force pushing the button again.

I have a nagging suspicion that several of the human interface engineers at GM spent their prior professional life as guards at Gitmo; at least that is the best explanation I have for some of the glaring human factors blunders in my three current GM vehicles.

It's just poor requirements writing. The legal speed for "low speed" features like Auto Park and Front Cameras showing up is 10 kph (or 6.25 mph). So probably GM put in some safety factor in and lowered it to 8 kph (or 5 mph), but made it a hard limit not a hysteresis.

This has nothing to do with the HMI, it's the underlying systems which publish these requirements to the HMI.

Are you sure you have front cameras? Not all models have them.

Better than moving it to the home screen is moving it to the top tray (I forget what the Owner's Manual calls it) That way you can touch the top of any screen and get access to the front camera icon.

Have read these responses and perhaps someone said this but:
Yep when I switch from reverse to first the front camera is on the screen.

If I have not used reverse and I want to see the front camera when parking; I put the car in 1st and bring up the display on the screen so all ICONS show (may have to hit back) and push the camera ICON in the lower right. There it is!

Exactly what do you use on the first screen? If you don't use them all, move the camera to the first screen. You can also move a copy of the camera app to the applications tray. I think you can have from 3-5 Aps displayed up there.

Default thanks

To those who helped me find the answer. thank you. Very helpful. As I said in my opening question, I couldn't find it in the manual, (even after searching all 200+ pages). Probably just didn't read every word close enough. I find the forum super helpful.

To those of you who always say the search function or the owners manual is your best friend: in the future if I can't find it in the manual or the search, I guess I shouldn't post a question. I didn't mean to offend you. I just couldn't find it. You might want to read the posting more closely. And I will try to read the manual more closely.

No worries. There will always be those who reply with RTFM. But there will always be those that provide helpful info too. Just skip over the noise. No biggie...

For an item like this the Owner's Manual is not helpful, IMO.

I mostly use the PDF version so I can search but tough to even find good search words for this. Frankly I usually find Google is also a far better search device than the Forum Search. No surprise as I eliminated the Search Function on my own 150 page website and replaced it with an Index. However it is very long and I often use Google myself to find a page I had not used in some time!

But the Corvette Forum is not as bad as Apple Forums where the answers start with some computer geek who expects you know what that first step they describe means and where to find the "Click on..."

Reminds me of an old Prof who said most textbooks are written by Professors for their piers! That sure is true! His was great as he taught himself "The Calculus" by first learning French while working at electric power company at night while going to school! He got his Phd, worked at Bell Labs and developed the rotor dial system! That was a long time ago and he was in his 80's then and I'm 75 now!

Remember, there are 2 owner's manuals. The "Owner's Manual" talks about everything except the infotainment system. The manual on the "Infotainment System" is the book that would discuss the APP screen and moving this junk around.

Although the front camera will indeed turn on with a reverse to first shift, that maneuver is not required. Just pushing the camera icon will turn it on, albeit at slow speed as people have mentioned. It sure helps me in getting into my narrow tight-fitting garage! I'm glad I have it.

It is a safety issue (distraction) that is regulated.

However it would be nice if the button could be pushed at 10 MPH or so and then bring up the camera view if the car falls to within the acceptable operating speed in the next 10 to 15 seconds. In parking lot maneuvers it would be nice to have the camera cued and ready to go so you aren't playing video games with the screen buttons while also watching for the usual parking lot antics of distracted/texting drivers.

In GM's credit they are getting better because at least the backup camera is useful in my 2016 Z06 but in my 2014 Cadillac ATS there is often a long delay between selecting reverse and getting the camera view. By the time it pops into the reverse display I am already out of the parking spot and going into drive.

I am sticking with my view that GM needs to up their game on human factors and ergonomics; they are close but not quite there and being close but not quite there is a very expensive loss when the competition does it better.

The applications tray is at the top
center of the screen. The
applications tray can have three to
five applications.
To add an application from the
Home Page to the applications tray:
1. Press and hold any icon on the
Home Page to enter edit mode.
2. Drag the icon to the
applications tray.
To remove an item from the
applications tray, drag the icon
from the applications tray back
to the Home Page.
Adding or removing applications
from the applications tray will not
remove them from the Home Page.
