Default Performance Shift Mode

When you really get on a A8 in the C7, the dash says “ Performance Shift Active. It gives really quick upshifts and downshifts. When you back off , it jumps out of Performace shifting. Is there a way to lock it in so it shifts that quick all the time?

Default Performance Shift Mode

Yes there is, drive like you stole it!!!

To be serious, it goes into PS during full throttle or excessive G force in sport or track mode. If you throttle back it will return to normal mode after appr 10-20 seconds and the only way to avoid it is to keep on pushing it! I find it too much on normal roads with limited grip and traffic but on track it is PERFECT. It also keeps the revs up high all the time also during downshift in automatic mode.

I enjoy using it for passing and other fun. Just a quick blip of the throttle will enable it. Very fun.

Is there a way to get it to stay in performance shift mode all the time via tuning? Maybe the tuner could set it up so that anytime you put the selector into track mode, the trans stays in performance shift mode too?

I don’t think you would want it to stay in performance shift mode. It would probably wear the transmission prematurely.

I wish there was a button or something that you could use, there are times when I would love PSM to stay for a couple minutes..

I have been using it with a quick blip, then when it starts to go back to normal I just give it another blip

That's why it would be good if it were only set up to go that way if you put it in track mode.

I don’t think it would be very fun to drive around with performance shifting under normal driving conditions.

Never knew that, so in sport or track the tranny shifts faster in WOT and dash indicates this? Will have to try this, thanks for the info guys.

Thanks for the back up and ideas. Anyone know of a tuner that could program this for just track mode?

Couple months old but relevant... I've realized PSM is amazing and I also want to be able to enable it via tuner or w/e option. The aggressive shifting feels AMAZING and it also gives it more throaty exhaust notes when you let off the gas. This PSM makes the car 100x more fun to drive so PLEASE tell me there's a way to enable it on demand without it 'turning off' because we're back to normal driving.

Or if there was a better way to trigger it rather than a blip of the throttle. It's rather easy to do but sometimes seems a little strange to the passenger :-)

Mine kicked in last week a couple of times during some spirited driving and it seemed to me that it was holding on and revving higher. At one point I manually shifted to a higher gear.
Anyone ever notice this or was it just one of those things....

Yea, it will do it based on your driving, but it's not a sure thing. The quick blip of the throttle forces it for sure. I just haven't figured out a smooth way to force it on as part of my driving technique.

The question would be what is actually changing in this mode. If someone was so inclined, I would think they could hook up a datalogger and watch some of the sensor values to see what's actually happening in the transmission. You could even measure shift times.

IIRC Spring Mountain instructs the automatic drivers to use manual mode not just for the fun of it but also to keep it out of PSM as sustained use may lead to overheating issues (Travelor, sound familiar?). Once on the track, one of the instructors told me to try to keep RPMs around 5500 as the sweet spot as you're not getting much more HP or torque after that with the LT1. Unless they are reluctant to wade into this, maybe socalspringmountain can confirm.

It's based on torque demand and throttle input mostly. Those values increase line pressure which affects shift time and feel. It is possible to tune the car with HP Tuners are similar to have a similar feeling.

Will the transmission still shift as it should on its own in a performance shift mode?

Yes, the shifts are quicker and the transmissions waits until RPM is higher, and holds RPM longer before shifting up.

Okay that's what I thought, I had a track day the other day and I told the guy about the performance shift , and he claims that his car wouldn't shift up until next gear. I did tell him it revs up pretty high I guess he got scared and lifted before it made that awesome shift! 🏁
