In my over 50 years of shade tree mechanic work I'd never seen this one. When we got home this morning I had an email from OnStar telling me i had a low tire. I had not gotten a low pressure warning and I had checked the pressures on the DIC while we were out and they were fine. I went back out to run another errand and the DIC warned me of low pressure (the same reading as the email - 16 pounds).
I ran the errand in the wife's car and bought a plug kit while I was out. Once home, as I was removing the valve stem cap I noticed the nut holding the stem against the wheel was rotating as well. Hmmmm. I tightened it and checked the other three. Two were a little loose. I aired up the tire and checked it twice during the evening with no drop in pressure. Problem solved, but it is a little concerning. Maybe this should be a periodic preventive maintenance item for me from now on.
BTW, these are aftermarket GM p/n wheels, mounted and TPMS installed by my local dealer a year ago.
Recently, I had a valve stem start losing about a 1/2 pound a week compared to the other three. This went on for a month or two before I bought a tool to tighten it. I tightened it about a half-turn, and leak solved.
I have no idea why it started to leak tens of thousands of miles after the last tire change. Never had any car do this before.
This has come up before -- and I appreciate the reminder because I've been having a little bit of leakage from my right front tire and will check torque on the valve stems.
