You are just not looking in the right place... just in front of the cap, and right above the seam on the front side of the tank is an arrow that points to the cold full level.. It is between the black part of the tank, and the first seam below that. I usually shine a small flashlight on the side of the tank to make the level easier to see.

It could be worse... my Wife's Mercedes ML350 diesel has no lines or markings at all. Lately it's been dinging low coolant. The reservoir is filled up 1" from the top like my truck and my cars. I added coolant to make it full and it hasn't thrown a warning in a month
