I have really enjoyed my A8.... BUT... It is now doing the Torque Converter surge.... for the second time. T/C was first replaced in late March 2016 (Vette built in late Jan 15). In fact I just called the dealer to schedule an appointment.
I'm told that GM is now on their 4th part# for the T/C. (not verified by dealer). This problem only occurs when in 8th gear and the vehicle running in V-4 mode.
Having driven my son's M7 15', I would be happy with either. My decision was based on the congestion on the roads I normally drive on, and the amount of stoplights I have to stop at. I have had nothing but issues with my 15' Z51, where my son's base M7 Vert has been completely trouble free. Both were special ordered and built within 2 months of each other.
This is another reason I went with a diablosport tune. Turned off the DOD so no more v4 mode. Tested mileage after tune and at a 60 cruise get better than stock at 29+mpg. That's with green filter, Borla off-road and tune. No worry about the TC issue. Reverting to stock tune is fast and so far undetected on previous car or this one by dealers.

I've had
1965 4spd - really fun
2006 automatic- was really good
2007 Z06 - Manual was really fun
2013 Z06 Manual was really fun
2016 Z51- Automatic- I really like an automatic, but had dreaded TC problem at 900miles
Overall I like the concept of the A8( auto/manual) I have not convinced myself the transmission is shifting right? still some hard shifts and down shifts? Will test another A8 to see if its me or the transmission
Agree. The concept is good, but seems to think different than me. In manual mode seems to work fine.
For those where the manual is part of the vette experience ( in a good way), your decision is easy, unless stuck in traffic a lot, physical limitations etc. For the rest of us who are worn out from years of pushing that clutch pedal in and out a gazillion times over the years in our corvettes and other performance cars, it's nice to have a modern paddle shifting auto that can be put in drive and cruise when thru playing. Yeah the manual is fun, but gets real old as it becomes a chore, for some of us ,that can be avoided by selecting auto mode in the A8.
Now if GM can finally come up with a fix for the continuous A8 TC/AT issues, I can replace my 2014 C7 A6, that has run flawlessly for 13000 miles, with hopefully a new 2019 Z06 A8. Maybe the fluid change to Mobil vs original Shell fluid blend is the answer ( although may be just another shot in the dark) as suggested by one of the posters in this thread. One can only hope.
I have 3K miles on my A8 since the fluid swap.
My A8 is still functioning fine.
I personally think these cars like to be driven, not parked for long periods of time.
The C7 is my work car, and it is doing it better than my C6 did, so far.
I love the fuel economy of the A8 over the A6... 37mpg compared to 31 in the C6.
I’ve owned a ‘15 Z51 M7, ‘16 Z06 M7 & a ‘17GS A8. Doing burnouts with the M7 is really easy and a lot of fun. Burnouts with the A8? Not nearly as much fun and much harder to do. Other than that, the A8 is a better choice for me. With all the gears in the M7, I found myself shifting all the time. On the freeway, I was constantly shifting between 6th and 7th. Shifting started to become a chore. With the A8, put it in drive and mash the peddle. At WOT, the A8 shifts very fast and the sound of the exhaust is intoxicating. For normal driving, the A8 is very smooth and responsive. If I was a “track rat,” I would choose the M7. However, for street driving, the A8 is a better choice.
Hey there,I just saw your response to the likes or dislikes of the C7 options. We seem to have some things in common.Since 1967 i've owned eleven Corvettes.Only five were automatics.I also am a retired(mostly tanker)truck driver.Did it for fourty four years.I've had a 2017 Z51 and still have a 2019 Grand Sport, both with the eight speed.I've learned to like the Eight speed but do miss the manual.I'm on the forum trying to see what folks feel about servicing their eight speeds.I have twenty six thousand miles on my Grand Sport and I am getting ready to head to Bowling Green(from so.California)for the Corvette Caravan.I'm wondering if I should have the fluid changed before leaving.Any thoughts?
Thanks,Wayne
The corvette caravan would be a blast and I hope you have a great time. I wouldn't change the transmission fluid with such low miles if you haven't had any problems with it so far. There is a chance the transmission shop would mess it up before you even go on your trip to Bowling Green. I would wait until you get back from the caravan and change it at that time. "If it's not broke don't try to fix it" applies here.
