Default VIN Question

My 2019 was produced the first week of production. The last two digits of the VIN are 47 with several zeros in front. Does this mean my vette is the 47th made this year?

VINs are sometimes built out of order. The VIN is assigned when the order is accepted by GM, but the actual sequence off the line is determined by things like option content and color. They build similar cars in batches.

Regardless, 0047 is an extremely low VIN. That's pretty cool.

While the last 5 digits are a sequence number, they are not unique because they are repeated between Stingrays and Z06's with the 12th digit of the VIN being a 1 for Stingrays/GS and 6 for Z06's. It will be interesting to see if the ZR1 has a unique 12th digit. So, even if they VINS are produced sequentially, because the last 5 digits get repeated for Stingrays/GS and Z06, it does not indicate that any specific number was the xxxxxth car off the line.

Figure this one out -

My '18 Grand Sport Admiral blue VIN is 105344. Another dealer 15 miles from my dealer has an '18 base stingray in Blade silver VIN 105347. Mine was build Dec 13, I dont know the build date of the base. Both my Vette and the base Vette were delivered on the same truck.

How close, or how far away on the line could they have been?

probably doesn’t answer the question but when I did the factory tour in 2014 it seemed like they generally were going through the line in groups of like colors as much as anything. Of course even if accurate the line is going to switch between colors at some point.

The GS and Stingray are built using the same last 5-digit sequence starting with vehicle #1. Z06 has it's own 5-digit sequence numbers also starting with vehicle #1. That's explains what you discovered. My '18 Z51 is 106193 built 1/18. My '14 is 135236.

As Zymurgy said, digit 12 is a 1 for GS or Stingray and a 6 for Z06. Thus for any given MY, 100001 would be the first GS or Stingray assigned a VIN, and 600001 would be the first Z06. 100002 could be a base or Z51 Stingray, and 100003 could be a GS. That makes perfect sense because the GS and Stingray share the same platform and drivetrain.

Just to make it more fun, there's pre-production VINs as well. These were built on the assembly line, but they can (almost) never be sold. The gray ZR1 at the Detroit Auto Show was 1G1Y42D93K50003EX.

Remember too that special editions like the Carbon 65 or GSCE will have another sequence. My GSCE is 5300043

I knew all of that. I just find it coincidental that my GS and the base vette, were numerically 3 VINS apart, painted in different colors, and delivered on the same truck to 2 dealers 15 miles apart.

If this were posted in OT, I'd surely get a "cool story bro"
