Default Semi-related

Something I heard about that I am more concerned with.

Municipalities with toll roads that accept EZ pass or EZ tags are measuring time between toll booths and determining if cars have been speeding based on how early they reach the next booth.

The US is just catching up on the automated speeding stuff. I know in the UK they do that in areas with cameras dedicated just for checking speed. They have signs advising you of those areas. I expect to see more automated speed reviews in the US as time goes by.

So, the officers at the scene use all the tools at their disposal. For decades prior to OBD they would analyze the scene and use eyewitness accounts to determine what happened. What happens when they scan your OBD data and don't find data relevant to the accident but notice something that incriminates you for something else?
LE cannot use the data from the recorder without the equivalent of a court order and only in conjunction with an official criminal investigation. They cannot access it at the scene of an accident, and it requires special equipment to retrieve it.

With regard to your observations about the use of "old school" methods, yes a lot of people got away with murder.

This is very, very, very old myth that in various forms has been around for decades. It's baloney. It started way before EZ pass was invented.

Yea, old thread.

But in short, if you want it off, sell your Corvette and any other modern vehicle you have. Essentially you can't turn it off....

Do some online research on EDR's, they are not readily accessible and only used in extreme situations where normal traffic investigation techniques are not useful or in extreme traffic collisions. Like I'm guessing the accident the other day with those 7 motorcyclists are killed, if there's an EDR on that truck I'm guessing they are looking at it.....

This is true. It has been the case for at least 30 years now, as we discussed the algorithms in use back when I was a freshman in college (shortly after dinosaurs ruled the earth).

It doesn't even require EZ pass, as a relatively simple formula can be used anytime there is a timestamp on both ends of a fixed-distance corridor.

If memory serves, the example we studied way back then was a tollway in PA that used it to determine the max speed you must have achieved at some point to get from the previous toll to the current one. if maxspeed > speedlimit = ticket.

EZpass just automates the whole process and makes the ticket generation easy since it does the calc, and already has all your info needed (via transponder code and license plate scan) to issue the ticket, just like speed cameras.

Exactly. You can do this with a paper ticket and some elementary school math.

Funny, my take, is I disagree with the disagree.
I consider driving an right. My use of any "public good", funded by my tax dollars, is my right. We pay for it, it ours, not the governments. Loss of the use comes from agreed upon legal violation (laws)
Government cannot tax me, then rule if I am "privileged" or entitled, to use the goods they mandated I pay for, or the goods I voted to be taxed for.
..just my $.02
Cheers!

You don't because it's not as simple as simply pulling a plug. The recorder is integrated in the Inflatable Restraint system's SDM (Sensing and Diagnostic Module). It's not as easy as disabling the airbag system on newer cars because it's integrated in the high speed communication loop with many other modules (PCM, BCM, EBCM, SDM, RCDLR, IPC, Chassis Control Module etc).
