Default Second gear manual

Wondering if I might cause damage by starting in second gear

No problem. Both the LT1 and LT4 have sufficient torque to make it easy to do. In fact you can even do it easily in 4th gear. Using 2nd or 3rd gear to start is a well known method of driving a car in very low grip situations. The less torque you put to the rear wheels the less likely they are to slip on initial start from a stop. If it will work on an econo box 4 banger with a manual transmission it will work better with a high torque V8 engine.

I do it all the time.. on my C5 Z06 it eliminates the 1-4 upshift.

Agree, no problem. There's so much low-end torque that 2nd is essentially the equivalent of 1st in many lower-powered vehicles. As long as you don't slip the clutch, it should no issue.

I can start in 1st at idle or zero throttle except on an uphill grade.
