Default A/8 transmission question

Ok, got an A/8 on order, and with the problems of the A/7, I am a bit worried. Is there anything I can do extra to protect the A/8 from blowing up like A/7.

What's an "A/7?"

The A8 has mixed feedback, as evidenced by the membership here. You won't know until you own one on what to expect (unfortunately.....).

Never heard of any Corvette transmissions “blowing up”. Have been reports of problems with A8 torque converters on early A8s.

Define "blowing up" and "A/7" please.

Not sure what you have heard and expect from the car.

I don't know what an A/7 is but my A8 has been fine for 4400 miles. Also, I think you will see more problems noted here than in the general C7 population.

From what I understand, the 2015 & 2016 models had the worst problems with the A8. Later cars have apparently been fine...

My suggestion is to keep the car in V8 mode as much as possible.
You can either drive in manual mode, use the plug in Range device or use the Diablosport Intune to disable V4 mode, commonly called AFM (Active Fuel Management, or DoD, (Displacement on Demand)

Drive it and don't worry
Forums create more issues than are really there. Your only going to hear about the issues. There are a lot of A8s out there problem free

I disagree with driving mostly in V8 mode. Just drive.

As long as you have the new ATF you will be OK.
The car has a drive train warranty. You will be fine.

A8 in a 2015 Z06 with 7,000 miles.

Photo of pan full of transmission internals.

I would say it "blew up".

There is no A7 to my knowledge only A8. The 2014 had the last A6 which was bullet proof. There is a M7 but no A7. Like others said there are good and bad A8's. I drive in M most of the time except in the City but on the road I use M mode to keep it out of V4 mode. Enjoy your new ride.

Buy a good extended warranty that covers all the trans parts including the Torque Converter, all the labor and go enjoy the car

He (OP) asked "is there anything "extra" I can do........
Driving/staying in V8 mode is safe, doesn't take much effort, and gives the "extra" he was asking for....

Old Joe has been posting that photo forever. Companies keep replacements for every transmission they sell in the repair inventory because, guess what, they all have instances of failure from the cheapest Chinese stuff through industrial Allison and Aisin transmissions.

The A8 in my 2016 Z06 works beautifully in all kinds of driving conditions however I do NOT let the engine go into V4 mode because constant modulation of the torque converter clutch is going to increase wear-there is no way you can constantly cycle a friction clutch multiple times per second without having far greater wear than one that locks and stays locked at cruising speed. Different fluids with different levels of friction modifiers can reduce and mask the issue but they don't make it go away.

There is no excuse for this. The car works fine in V8 and V4 mode with the proper ATF.

All V8 mode adds wasted gasoline.

2016 here, December 2015 build. No A8 problems yet with 10K on it. Only issue i ever experience is hard shift from 1st to second after it has been sitting for a while and i drive it in cold temps. after it warms up its smooth as silk

Three sides to every story. Was this car beaten like a rented mule? Modifications? And, of course, a valid warranty claim / manufacturing defect. My A8 is a hoot! Runs like a top.
