Here we go, every time someone asks about a navigation upgrade all the "use your phone" yahoo's crawl out of the woodwork.
Honestly to answer the OPs question, with the new USB based system, updates are not cheap, and they rarely are discounted. I wouldn't upgrade more than every 4-5 years as the changes made are not significant.
I'm actually of the opinion, by the way all you phone people, that the UI on phone navigation is terrible. So it's great you have updated maps, but you have a terrible interface which you actually have to use. I'd rather take a better UI (including HUD integration) and have the maps be a little outdated. I check the roads on my phone before I go anyway, so the car navigation is mostly as reminder (and a good checker of how much time you have left).

Our 2017 was made 9-2016, with factory Nav. When I got the 2018 update last Fall (GM updates seem to come in the Fall), there was a big improvement in the accuracy of the depicted speed limits and the roads have been very good both locally and on long trips out to AZ/NV/UT/NM.
We've had several different factory Navs, two Garmins, and several smart phones with N.
All of them will work, all of them have disadvantages. We prefer the factory Nav systems.

Switched to Android Auto and never looked back. If I'm ever out of coverage area, which hasn't happened yet, I'll fall back to the factory nav, but I won't order a car with nav again as long as it has Android Auto.

Love Waze!
i use an I-phone and use an app called waze for all of my travels. Directions are spot on and detours are given in the event of an accident or heavy traffic. Oh, and BTW it also tells you where the LEO'S are in real time. Other features are numerous and never needs to be updated. WAZE is the way to go.
Waze is one of the apps that works with Apple CarPlay!

I have done the GM updates twice and new roads are missing. Car Play is the only way to go. Or Android if that is your phone's software. I spent $1200 updating my hardware on my 2014 so I can get CP and is it all anyone needs. The GM update was installed just a month ago and is out of date. The CP or AA is continually update and is certainly the way to go.

I recently updated both my Terrain and Vette Nav systems with the $99 offer from GM. The update is what is being delivered on 2019 cars and covers the major interstate that I needed included. I might update again in 3 or 4 years if any newer updates are available.

Can someone confirm if I buy the map update for my 2016 Z06 if I will also be able to use the same USB stick to update the maps in my 2015 Stingray? I want to make sure I can update both cars and only need to buy one since they are $100 a piece. Thanks in advance!
