Took a rock to my wind shield!!! Thought I got lucky but next mourning it was cracked. I do have a HUD was thinking Safe Lite replacement about 700 bucks. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with them?
I guess I should buy their stock live in TX and this is my 3rd windshield this year. 1st in the Vette.
I took a really big rock to my windshield last week. It sounded like a gun shot. So far, no cracks, just a small group of little chips in the glass. Fortunately, it's not in my field of view (that's a first). In fact, from the drivers seat, you can't see it because it's hidden by the rear view mirror.
Actually I took two first was very large half hour later, second was smaller and I think its the one that caused the crack. Not in field of view but prolly 6 inches long and goes to the edge.
What is your comprehensive coverage? Depending upon state and carrier this can be a no-deductible replacement. Start with your agent.
I have read mixed results with replacement OEM vs after-market HUD windshields and if the replacement windshield doesn't have the proper reflective qualities the HUD image will be less sharp with lowered brightness and contrast. Be careful that the installing firm doesn't just run your HUD brightness at a much higher level to compensate because you won't have the reserve brightness needed when using sunglasses with the windshield in bright sun.
The windshields for HUD-equipped C7s are different, and stamped HUD in large letters. Stick with OEM glass. There have been several reports where folks went w/ aftermarket glass, and the HUD image was fuzzy/out of focus afterward.

Yep...agree.Some states, like SC this is replaced at no cost.Just call in the ins co.
and yep#2....stick with OE glass.
Not too surprising. I did my PhD out in W. Texas and in hot weather they dumped gravel on the farm to market roads (which were most of the roads in W. Texas) leaving it to cars to push it into the hot asphalt. Plenty of potential for rock damage.
I wonder if those protective films for windshields really do any good? Might be worth doing some research.
^^^ What he said and what Foosh said. Even the folks at Safelite said I would be better off with the OEM. I have replaced 3 of them on this car and were all OEM. I don't have the HUD though. My insurance is $100 deductible and my insurance approved the OEM or the aftermarket. My choice. Of course I went with the OEM.
Some posters here might exclaim that Safelite is not good, but my experience over the years has been excellent.

I agree. I've had nothing, but good experiences with Safelight, and they will often recommend you stick with OEM glass on high-end cars, and special applications like HUD. They'll even order it for you, unless that's changed in the last couple of years.
