Default Overheating

After 49,000 miles with no big problems, my Vette started overheating. Temp went up to the red zone at a light. I pulled over, shut down, waited awhile and drove home with windows open and heat blasting. Checked coolant and reservoir was very low. Got in my SUV and went to parts store for Dex Cool. Put in 1/2 gallon. Drove to work, 25 miles on interstate, no problem. Dealer called and said to bring it in. Temp rose to 250 in traffic. Again, windows open, heat blasting. I don’t think the fan is coming on. Normally, it is easy to hear. Fortunately, I bought a long extended warranty a few years ago. I’ll update when I hear back from dealer.

Sounds like a bad fan motor, or fan control module.

But he said the coolant was very low. Maybe a leak somewhere or a bad thermostat and leak there?

Or it spewed-out coolant from the pressure relief valve in the cap when it was overheating.

Just heard from the dealership. The water pump was leaking. The part is over $800. I have an extended warranty, but also have time left on my powertrain warranty. I think it is covered under powertrain. In addition, a belt tensioner is leaking oil,. That part is $300. I'm hoping that too is covered.

Sounds like good news with the extended warranty in your pocket. That would bite me hard in the wallet without an extended warranty. I hate surprises!

I misunderstood, part and labor for water pump was over $800. Part and labor for belt tensioner about $300. Since I still have powertrain warranty, water pump was covered. My extended warranty covered the belt tensioner, but I have a $100 deductible. My final cost was $107 because of 7% tax in Sarasota county. Hopefully, everything is copacetic.

SRQ be glad a new pump will cure your over heating problem. Others overheat because of a suspect fan / computer problem. I have the Extended also. At those prices, looks like I made a wise decision.
