The motel industry standard is 12 months to accept advance reservations, but Yellowstone lodges(in the park) is now 18 months out. That's how busy crowed Yellowstone is. It is easier to get late reservations in West Yellowstone(outside of the park) as that's where the chain motels are and in Gardiner, MT(north entrance) with it's chain motels.
It is getting so bad that rooms along the Interstates at getting harder to find if you wait to late. Best to try and get your motel reservations along your route at least 6 months in advance and 12 months in advance anywhere near a National Park.

The last two time we traveled north to south through Yellowstone. We were able to find rooms in Livingston, MT through well in advance reservations. But, they ain't cheap no more. Even with all that if one has never been through Yellowstone it's well worth the time. It is a most beautiful ride.
