Once the car gets anywhere near operating temperature, the analog dash gauge sits (on mine anyway) just a tick under 220. But if you go to the performance screen and look at the digital readouts, the engine temp will be around 180 or so, depending on whether you have the AC on or not. If its on it will stay lower around 185, if its off it will fluctuate more. For some strange reason GM made the dash temp gauge almost useless.
Normal people that see a temperature gauge swing up and down start to wet their knickers at the movement. AC, temp goes up... Traffic, temp goes up... Fan comes on temp goes down... Driving on the highway in 20°F temps, temp goes down...
OMG, something is wrong! The temp gauge is erratic and has mood swings! Go to the dealer!!!
Or, you can be a gearhead and the swing won't faze you a lick.
So, they made the gauge to read cold, go to just below 220 and sit there. If it goes up into the red area, then they can wet their knickers and go to the dealer.

I thought only the 2014s did this. Seems like they could have put a note in the owners manual about the fluctuation, and to save on knickerwetting!
