Hey guys! Check out my image just beneath the engine cover. I found what I think was rust, and wanted to confirm if any of you have experienced something similar. Someone on another thread said it looks like it was dumped into the sea for an extended period of time.

My Vette is a 2017 GS with about 11k miles on it. I'm the original owner since Jan '17.
Thanks!

If the rust bugs you, you can swap them out for Z06 exhaust manifolds which are stainless steel supposedly. Or a nice set of stainless Kooks headers would do the trick 😉.

You could take them off and spray with high temperature paint.... but probably not worth it...

Why would you think it is not normal for cast iron to rust?

I owned a 15 stingray before the GS and don't recall seeing any rust here. Just comparing apples to apples really.

If that bothers you what about the rust on the muffler welds and areas around the welds? All C7's look that way if you look! Saw that in August 2013 on an IVER1 I used Rust-Olium Rust Reform and makes it look better. Easy to apply and it only changes rust to a blue black!

I tried it on the exhaust manifold. Helps some but not quite as much.

Here is a PDF and some pics below: http://netwelding.com/Muffler_Rust.pdf

Before and after pics of exhaust and exhaust manifold. Note manifold turned blue/black but still showed some rust after a day.
Note apply several light coats waiting 30 minutes between. It will not do anything to the non rusted parts. It's not a paint, won't peel and has the consistence and look of milk No need to be careful just coat the rust. No need to remove anything just use a small brush attached to a stick as shown!

JerryU ,You always seem to have a great solutions for problems posted here on forum. Just wondering if the blue on manifolds turn blackish or stayed blue? Thanks for all your PDF's showing How too.Dave

Thanks, it’s a fun hobby and been retired now for 18 years so need to keep the brain exercised!

I do have a part time internet business unrelated to cars, volunteer for two Tech Societies and do some welding consulting but have time to mess with cars!

After a few days the manifold turned a brown black but some rust still showed. The exhaust looked as good as when I did it 3 years after when I sold the 2014. It is not a paint rather a chemical that converts iron oxide (rust) into ferric tannate and ferric phosphate. Works better on some iron oxides so assume the cast iron rust is not optimum.

I had my factory manifolds ported and ceramic coated in black. A few years later and they still look great, plus gained +8whp in the process!
