I'm not sure if I pressed some wrong button or virtual button, but I haven't been able to undo this problem. I think this happened when I was pressing some button on the infotainment screen.
The Nav "button" (virtual button) on top of the infotainment screen stopped displaying direction and instead just displays two dashes. There seem to be two modes. The "normal" button, but without the direction display and some kind of button that looks like it came from a Tim Burton movie, also with two dashes instead of the direction.
The GPS still works. The map orients itself properly set to "heading up" view or "north up" view.
Is this some kind of malfunction, or is it simply a setting that needs to be changed?
When I strolled out to the garage this morning to try out the linked suggestion (which I interpret as "try removing the shortcut and then putting it back"), the two dashes were missing from the icon. That was weird because they were there last night. And of course there was still no direction displayed in the icon.So I tried removing the shortcut and putting it back, but the same thing happened: The dashes were still missing and still no direction. I tried it again, this time removing the shortcut, then shutting off the car while I went shopping, then after coming out of the store, putting the shortcut back. This time, the dashes were restored, but still no direction displayed.Any other thoughts on this matter?
PS: Does anybody else hate this new posting interface? I wonder if anybody in the tech department bothered to test it before putting it online.
Compass Messages
Dashes may be displayed if the
vehicle temporarily loses
communication with the Global
Positioning System (GPS).
Take a look at your GPS screen in the top right corner to see if you have a red "X" through GPS.
I would disconnect the negative battery terminal for a minute or so and connect it back and see if the dashes disappear and direction is shown.
It may take a minute or so. Remember to re-index your windows after connecting the battery back. You may want to take it for a short drive to
see if it locks on to GPS.
If all goes well, the red "X" should disappear as well. If it doesn't there may be a problem with the GPS antenna wire connection.
Thanks for your replay and thanks for pointing out where the manual talks about the compass. I looked in the infotainment system manual but didn't find anything. I didn't think to look in the owner's manual.
I do not get the GPS Red X problem. (I can demonstrate it in my garage, of course, where there is no GPS signal.) But the GPS Red X goes away as soon as I pull out of my garage. Additionally, the GPS is clearly working as demonstrated when using the map. The map clearly orients itself as instructed, either heading up or north up and continues to maintain either orientation correctly when driving.
I'll give your battery disconnect suggestion a try,

God knows I've made many stupid mistakes in my life, but in this particular case I have been testing the GPS system while outside.

I tried disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes, then reconnecting it. Re-indexed the windows, thanks for the reminder.|It still only has the dashes in the nav icon, and the GPS still works just fine otherwise. The map knows my location and it orients itself appropriately according the north up or heading up.|Any other suggestions are welcome.
From the OM. "The vehicle may have a compass display on the center stack. The compass receives its heading andother information from the Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna, StabiliTrak®, and vehicle speed information.
The compass system is designed to operate for a certain number of miles or degrees of turn beforeneeding a signal from the GPS satellites. When the compass display shows CAL, drive the vehicle for a short distance in and inopen area where it can receive a GPS signal. The compass system will automatically determine when a GPS signal is restored and providea heading again. See Compass Messages on page 5-32 for the messages that may be displayed forthe compass."
Maybe you just need to drive it to reset? Then reevaluate the situation.
Do you have the compass direction on the instrument cluster?
I don't recall ever seeing compass direction on the instrument cluster. It is definitely not displayed there now.

I am not a subscriber to OnStar but have never disabled the OnStar system.

This system worked perfectly, including displaying direction on the shortcut, until a few days ago. I do not get a GPS error message except when the car is in the garage. Once it is under the sky, the GPS Red X goes away. The GPS seems to work fine when it comes to being able to pinpoint the car's position on the map, and when it comes to orienting the map north up or heading up, whichever is selected.I have put about 30 miles on the car since removing and replacing the shortcut icon earlier today.Still no joy. The icon no longer shows direction.Thank you all for your suggestions.I'll call GM customer service in the morning and will report back as any information or resolution develops.
OP, I am having the exact same issue, did you ever get it resolved?
Unfortunately no. I tried getting help from GM and they treated me badly.
So I traded in the Corvette towards a Raptor under the theory that life is too short to deal with difficult-to-solve electronics problems. The Vette was a joy until it started having a couple of weird electronic glitches. Those took the joy out of it for me. So, buh-bye.
