Unless something has changed OnStar can still be used in an emergency even without paying for a plan.
I've heard that before too (manual emergency call still works), but cannot confirm. And Murphy's Law being what it is, that unconfirmed loophole would be closed the day before I needed it!
At any rate, I think the automatic crash response is disabled if you don't have an active paid plan.

Someone actually honked at me and asked for my wifi password in traffic. I have corvette in my wifi name so they knew haha.
I'm in network cybersecurity. You should avoid having your location or vehicle name as part of your WiFi SSID name. It identifies and zero's you as a target for hackers. Not very safe.
OK I have zero use for this- I will not renew or buy any extra gigs etc- Are people doing a lot of surfing while driving around?????? I rarely have passengers most of them engaged in the vette experience not banging away on their devices. Will it stop reminding me when i dont renew?
Also On Star- Im not renewing that- what is it they possibly can provide that my iphone doesnt? Calling 911 automatically in an accident- Im in metro NY 1000 people will call in your accident before onStar would initiate a call, driving directions -seriously this is 2018 google maps or waze far superior to in car nav
Just another way to wring a few buck from us. I like driving my vette and could care less about the wifi. I can wait until I get home to use the internet.

Understand! Have my iPhone set to not receive messages when I am driving. Never hooked up Bluetooth, don't, want the temptation to use it! If I need to call I'll pull over and call! Nothing is that important!
I work at keeping my ~60 year record of not having an accent with another car (looking for wood as luck has been a factor) by watching for all those distracted drivers today that make it difficult!
Except when my wife is in the car (which is seldom) all other friends are holding on to the grab handle - as taking corners fast is "part of the Vette experience!"

I think so. I still get OnStar renewal requests on our 2011 Traverse, destroyed 1/1/17.
I would imagine/hope that the automatic emergency notification works if the vehicle electricity is out.
I called in a serious traffic light problem one time after our plan expired, and the agent told me that it wasn't enough of an emergency to follow through. Traffic was backed up for miles.
