Advancements of Taillight Technology
There is this question on the current Ask Tadge Poll. If anyone is interested in a response from Tadge Juechter on this topic go and vote on this question.
First and foremost I think the C7 taillights are a beautiful, geometrically complex, and integrated design that advanced the C7 generations rear fascia design. Observing the contentious hate affair over the loss of the traditional four simple and basic round taillights of the C6 generation I realize there are logical reasons for the C7's new design of its taillights. I've always thought there was a dual fresnel design function to the internal faceting of the taillight binnacles. Since round taillights have a concentric facet configuration internally they can only send light straight out and still retain a symmetric faceted look. All four of the C7's taillights have sloped bottoms and sloped sides to splay light wide and in a downward direction. Can this design send light straight out when the car is in forward motion and can they also send light in a downward direction when put in reverse thereby lighting the roadway for the backup camera? In effect having a dual functioning use and eliminating separate backup lights. Could you also reveal any new lighting functions that these new generations of LED taillights can accomplish?

For all of you folks that threw a hissy fit over the lose of the circular taillights, this may be a fabulous opportunity to get an answer out of Tadge!! What better person to give you the technological update of what is bound for the tail end of future Corvettes?

GM Design Director Tom Peters did a pretty good job of explaining his reasoning in this video from a few years back.

"In honor of jpee"
I hadn't seen the Tom Peters vid before. While I like the overall design of the rear, he did give two main reasons regarding the design, the first being, when you stand back it has to look like a Corvette.
My opinion only: if you take off the flag and the word, it does not look like any Corvette I've seen in the past. In that respect, it is not an evolution but a completely different design of the entire rear end.
As I said, jmo, and I realize this is a tail light discussion but since the vid was referenced...

I'm hoping they keep the same C7 taillight theme on the C8. I've seen some cool renderings Hopefully they'll pick up on that. And yes, I 'd rather Tadge address that rather than yet another ZR1 issue.

Some things are done simply to meet someones idea of "great design" (that being mostly subjective, if not totally), and there's little more to it. Of course, that doesn't mean that a corporate or other someone cannot supply and explanation/justification as verbose as the original post.

I don't think anyone who owns a C7 threw a hissy fit but for those who did as well as non-owners alike, round things on an angular body just doesn't work, it's as simple as that.

(...waiting for some wise-guy to come along and remind us that angular cars have round wheels...>

Here is a video that describes the latest headlight and taillight technologies. I would imagine that Tadge Juechter and the Corvette team have developed the new ME Zora lighting systems to take advantage of these new technical advancements. The Ask Tadge Poll is still up if any of you want to hear from Tadge on this subject.
