Hey fellas. What code readers are you using? Good? Bad?
After what happened with my C7 and my kid's cars being older and throwing codes now and then, I want to get one. It doesn't have to be the bare bones cheap-o version.

What are your experiences?
One that will access all the modules is expensive I have one from Foxwell it will read all the codes and reset them.
If you need more then about $1000 & up along with a subscription to GM is needed. cost anywhere from $70 per 3 days to several thousand per year
Not trying to hijack but was wondering if a GM Tech 2 clone will read codes on a C7?
Nope ... The C7 a different interface to communicate with the CANBUS MDI communications bus , the tech two knockoffs come with a CANDI module that talks to the CANBUS in earlier GM models
From what I have seen and read about the MDI device the software is the same and the computer interface that runs on a laptop now looks exactly like the interface that is on a TECH two https://www.boschdiagnostics.com/pro...ral-motors-mdi http://scantoolresource.com/gm-scan-tool-2/

I bought a VXDiag for use on my wife's Mazda. It was cheaper than paying someone to relearn the key she broke. The tool works ok, but you do get into some really sketchy territory when it comes to software licensing....
For what it's worth, I bought a legit MDI off eBay. You can get a 3 day software subscription from GM. The GDS2 software looks nothing like the Tech2 interface. The laptop based Tech2 software is really just to let the MDI talk to older cars and keep the user interface consistent with the old service manual procedures.
Jeff , so the MDI software is different .... ?
They have knock off MDI units I wonder if they work as good as the knockoff TECH ll I had ?
thanks for the info as I have been looking all over for a replacement Tech ll replacement for my C7

I don't know anyone who has an MDI clone, so I can't comment on those. I got very, very lucky and bought a genuine MDI from an online pawn shop that didn't know what it was.
BlueDriver. It reads and clears codes on most vehicles. Free app and updates. I have it installed on my iPhone and iPad. Works great. https://www.bluedriver.com/
OBDLink MX is pretty decent too. But as with nearly all the generic code readers, it'll only do emissions stuff. The hardware can talk to everything in the car, but the software is the limiting factor.
and downloaded https://www.palmerperformance.com/products/dashcommand/iphone/index.php for my iPhone and iPad Mini to record more data than I'll ever use.
Easy to install, pair and use.
