I'm asking for a friend that has not yet joined the forum. He has a 2014 C7 with 14K miles. It developed a loud tapping noise hat increased with RPM. Took it the dealer who thought it was a bad lifter on the right side. They installed new lifters and the tapping continued. Allegedly the dealer contacted GM Tech and they are now telling the dealer to disconnect the the drive shaft to the trans to try to isolate where the noise is coming from. It's been in the shop for 4 weeks. The dealer provided a loaner for only 4 days....that's it.
I told my friend he was much more patient than I would be and I personally would demand a new engine from GM rather than disassembling it time and again to TRY to locate the problem. I also would want the dealer to pay 1/12th of my yearly insurance premiums and demand a car to drive until mine is repaired.
I'm curious what forum members would do in a similar situation.
First, I wouldn’t “demand” a new engine, because that won’t happen. Neither will demanding GM pay your insurance. I’d contact GM Customer Care and see if they can help. Getting an attitude and making unreasonable demands won’t help at all.
I know it is a different engine but I recently had the exact same issue with my 2010 C6 with 47,000 miles. Dealer said it was a lifter and wanted $2,200 to fix it. I went to a small Corvette/Camaro shop for a second opinion. Their mechanic found #5 cylinder plug wire not seated on the plug! Problem solved.

After a month in the shop with no loaner and no answer what the problem is, I personally would do anything to light a fire under GM's butt. If they can turn around a SpaceX rocket in 2 days and it's a lot more complicated than a C7, someone is blowing smoke up his a++. I give my friend credit for not blowing a gasket. I told him the squeaky wheel gets the grease. I'm sure his patience will wear out soon. Thanks for your thoughts though.

+1 the fight is with GM, not the dealer. Pissing off the dealer will only make things worse. Trust me, they don't want the car sitting there taking up space.
Is the car still under warranty? If not, your friend may be SOL as far as expecting anything from GM. If it still has powertrain warranty, I'd suggest calmly dealing with the issue and not make outrageous demands.
