Default 2016 C7 Z51 Engine Failure

I am at a loss on what to do so I would appreciate any advice on my situation. I recently purchased a used 2016 C7 Z51 M7 from a Dodge dealership. The car had right around 13k miles when I purchased it. The car was purchased right at the end of June and drove great for the first few weeks I've had it. This Monday, 8/6/18 I was driving at a normal rate of speed, around 45mph. The car made a loud pop and the cabin filled with white smoke. I pulled to the side of the road and the car continued with the smoke. I looked under the car and could see oil gushing out. I immediately had the car towed to a local GM dealership.

The Corvette specialist determined that it was a complete engine failure and they are now sending information to GM to get approval to install a replacement engine. The problem i'm having is that I havent even made my first payment on the car. I am horrified that the replacement engine is going to affect the resale value of the car. The spec is everything I have been looking for and a new engine sounds great, but the resale value is my biggest concern at the moment.

Those of you who have been through this or know someone else that has, would you recommend I go with the replacement engine, or do I do everything I can to get the dealership that I bought it from to purchase the car back? How will a new engine affect the resale value of the car?

Thank you for the advice...

So I can speak to this, at 30,000 while driving down the highway my motor grenaded on me also . Got it towed to the dealer and 10 business days later I drove out with a brand new GM crate motor and a complete detail , you cannot even tell my car was worked on ...and I am picky

the good thing , I got a brand new motor and an extension to my warranty
the bad thing , I got a brand new motor in a Corvette

Now our cars will never be a 100 point pebble beach winners , and there are way to many of them on the road for it to ever become a collectable car in our life time so I just resigned myself to the fact that I am going to drive it , enjoy it and just not worry about it

I also have a good friend that had the same thing happen to him at 3700 miles ......
stuff happens but I am praying that lightning does not strike twice

I don't think the dealer will by your car back. Get the new engine and enjoy your car. Don't worry about resale. You are going to take a bath new engine or not.

I sold a C4 many years ago with a new dealer installed engine under warranty. The person who bought it liked the idea that the car was used but had a new engine with fairly few miles on it.

Now you'll be able to tout "Brand New engine at 13K miles!" Most certainly cannot say that.

Turn your "lemon" into lemonade, as the adage goes.

Youll have a fresh motor that only you know, that you get to break in like the car is brand new. No matter how hard the engine was beaten before, the new one is yours to treat right. A new engine could be a selling point down the road. A dealer wont care if you decide to trade it in.

If you bought the car with intentions of making/not losing $$$ then you shouldn't have been driving it. It should have been sitting in your garage all covered up waiting for the day you sold it.

A factory complete crate engine, installed under warranty by a GM dealer, with an extended warranty? I would have no qualms buying it and I'm as picky as the next guy. Make sure you keep ALL the written documentation -- enjoy your new car. Break the new motor in correctly, take good care of it and drive the snot out of it. These cars are made to be driven. In a couple years when you sell it, or trade it in; no one will care. Best of luck, enjoy your new car. - tom

I would have zero issues with it. You get a factory new engine with a warranty that only you have ever run.

If you ever decide to trade the car the dealer will look at the odo for the mileage, and that's all. He/She won't ask if the engine has been replaced. And, as stated above you'll be an old man before the car is collectible, and that is the only time someone will be concerned that it had the engine replaced at 13K mile. I'm with everybody else, jump in, drive the car, and enjoy the ride. I hope they get you back on the road soon. God luck.

I see no reason to complain about the new engine. It's a modern corvette, not a Ferrari. It's only gonna lose value anyway. Personally i'd buy one with a newer engine vs one that had original engine in it.

It will be on the carfax ...and a dealer or a buyer might hold that against u on trade value... I look at it this way, mine blew up and I really do not have a choice , the dealer is not going to take it back and I would just tell u to make sure you demand a new motor and not have them rebuild yours .... I got a new motor that runs and I am enjoying the heck.out of it

I'm more curious to know what caused the engine to fail in the first place.

Let the factory warranty fix the car and continue on enjoying your life! After all, that is why cars come with warranties.

mine was a broken intake valve spring on number 2 , was driving 70MPH at the time so there was not a chance to pull it over and shut it off before the retainer let loose and the valve dropped into the cylinder and just wreaked havoc ....

my friend c7 also dropped a valve and a lifter let loose ...
if undo a search it seems like the valve springs are a common issue ...

Misshift/overrev? I'd be curious if anything like this ever happened to an automatic c7

OP you're being completely unrealistic. No one, not the Dodge, GM dealer or GM is going to replace the car. It is even caveat emptor when you buy a new car and drive it for awhile---you won't get a replacement car after 6 mos or two years. Be realistic.

Get the engine replaced under warranty and few will bat an eye come time to sell. It's not a Ferrari, or even a Z06. Life's too short to worry that much. JMO.
