I'm planning to install an MGW shifter next week, and wanted to see if anyone recommends any additional insulation above what comes with the MGW shifter?
Thanks, Bob
I installed mine a couple months ago and no additional insulation is needed. There isn't enough room or good enough access to the tunnel to benefit. I had previously installed the Exotic Vette Extreme kit in the car which is far more effective than what can be accessed with the shift box out. Hope this helps.
It's pretty straightforward with the video instructions. The connector to the lighter/power plug was harder than it looked for me. Other than that it was easy. It's well worth it 👍🏻
Installed mine two weeks ago. Main reason was vibration noise. It was coming from the cue ball shift **** I installed about a year ago and suspected the buzz I was getting, that was worse at certain rpm’s, was caused by the aftermarket aluminum bottom section of the cue ball **** versus the OEM hard plastic.
Talked to George at MGW to see if their new Flat Stick had the reduced vibration mentioned as a feature for their standard model as I could feel the vibration if I felt through the shift boot. He said it did. In fact grabbing the OEM shifter mecanisum through the boot stopped the noise. George said he had heard of that vibration/noise issue with that cue ball size aftermarket ****.
I bought their extra insulation because thought it might be useful and it was cheap! Also thought if I messed a piece up I could replace it! The “stuff” is very sticky and can stick to itself and parts not wanted! In fact for the sound insulation I found cutting the large section in half and butting the cut edges made it easier to install. As someone mentioned, there is no room for more material.
However the “good news” is the “Flat Stick” is very quite, certainly no shifter noise compared to what I had that was getting worse! Great very well built product.
The link below is a detailed PDF of my install. It mostly uses pics taken from the MGW excellent video’s. Note there are 4 or 5 that take ~1 hour to view. George from MGW recommended watching the C6 as it is the latest and contains OEM shifter box removal that is not in the 3 C7 video’s. It has some tricks I found useful.
