Default Advice on buying a GS

hi all, looking to buy a GS and still on the fence about getting a used 2017/2018 vs a new 2018/2019. My last vette was a 65, so I知 guessing quite a bit has changed since then.

I知 really only looking for a 2LT and the PDR would be nice but not a deal breaker, so I can find some used ones that I like, but my question is are there any issues with the 2017s, since it was the first year? (I知 thinking not since it痴 basically a base stingray). Any improvements for 2018 or 2019 that are worth the higher cost over a used 2017?

Since most 2017s should still have a year or so warranty left on them and are $10-15k less then new, I知 kind of leaning tha way but would be great to get input from those more experienced.

Appreciate the help!

If you get 18 or older from a dealer just make sure you have the mag ride update and if it's an automatic have the trans flushed with the new LV fluid.

other than that? Buying used is the wisest choice for an investment this size unless money is no object.

I bought my first new vette in 2016 and probably my last as I see so many 1k 2k mile cara used that already got crushed on resale.

hard to beat when I bought mine at 22% off but that deal has never come around again.

good luck.

I love my 17 GS. No problems whatsoever. But the only thing that is "base" about it is the engine. The rest of it is Z06 components....tires, brakes, suspension, body panels etc. It is much different than a base, even though a base is an awesome car as well. Good luck with your purchase....

I would go for a new car, 2019 if you can afford it, if for no other reason than it'll be worth more when you trade it. Larger dealers (e.g., MacMulkin, Kerbeck) will discount new cars enough that might put the price very close to that of a nice used 2017. Functionally they're all about the same, with the exception that a late 2018 or 2019 will have the MSR upgrade. If you opt for a car without it, have the dealer agree to install the upgrade as a part of the deal, as it is worth the money IMO. If you are not heavily in favor of getting an A8, consider an M7 instead. A8s have been problematic and I see no evidence the issues are categorically fixed even in the 2019s. Been there, done that.

Good luck with your purchase and hope you make a great decision. I just put my order in for a new factory order GS last week. Certainly interesting questions you raise. You should also consider all these C7s are going to take a big price hit (most likely) once the C8 comes out fall next year. Excluding a discussion of depreciation I still purchased my car as I did not want to deal with paint and fittment issues which seems to have been more prevalent on the eralier vehicles than the current 2019 vehicle. Also I believe the A8 in earlier 2017 had some vehicles with auto trans problems and I did not want to run the risk of dealing with that issue. Something you may want to consider should you decide to go with a new 2019. One option which impressed me with the 2 LT trim is the two color seat option with the microfiber insert. That interior looks so much nicer than the stock 1 color seat. Look it over on the configurator an see what you think, I know Criswell Chevy and Mike Furman orders many of their cars in that configuration. You should at least give it a look. The grey and black is particularly nice looking. If price alone is driving your purchasing decision I would think about holding off until next year and see how the market changes coming play out. You just might be able to pick up a bargain on a 2018 or 19 model year new car. Good luck.

Seems like there have been cracked or bent rims on the 2017 and 2018. Haven't heard any 2019 with that problem. Not sure whether they beefed up the rims or the mag ride update fixed it. But I got the 2019 and that's what I'd recommend. Having a software programming background and knowing how much programming is in these cars I want all the software updates.

I haven't read this anywhere. Is there any truth, regarding the 2019 wheels, to this statement? I thought I have read 2019 owners griping about bent wheels and cracking too. I thought all C7s were effected. Wonder if the part numbers changed on the 2019 wheels.

If you can locate those posts let me know. I don't remember seeing any 2019. Lots of 2017 and 2018. 3300 miles on mine and no issues. Am I just lucky?

I'll look for them. Would be great news if this is true (at least for 2019 owners).

There's some anecdotal evidence that the bent/cracked wheel issue may have been caused by tire overinflation, and the magnetic ride system being too harsh, thus the reprogramming option to offer a slightly less harsh ride. I don't know if there's any truth to this, but if you buy any used GS, have the wheels checked for bends and cracks. There was a lady on the forum who purchased a new GS in the past few months, and had two cracked/bent wheels in her first 1500 miles, but I don't know if hers is a 2018 or 2019. For what it's worth, I negotiated a GM Wheel and Tire Protection package for 3/36k, with a lifetime benefit of $6000...I don't want to have to worry about avoiding every bump in the road. The 2019s come with the update to the magnetic ride system. Seems I read somewhere that the rear camera got an update in 2019 to a slightly better resolution.

The discounts were better on 2017s and 2018s, but I wanted to order, to get exactly what I wanted. So, I joined the National Corvette Museum for $50, got my GM Supplier Discount code from them, and it took around $5000 of the price of my car. Certainly helped when there were no other incentives available on 2019s.

I factory-ordered my 2019 GS, and it took around 8 weeks. Car is flawless, no issues (other than the rattling top, but that was easily fixed with some dielectric grease on all the contact points, and after 500 miles (just hit it this morning), the car has been awesome. It's my third Vette (2010 Coupe and 2012 GS), and this car is a quantum leap ahead of those.

My 2019 GS is a 7-speed manual (M7), in black, with black interior, and the only options I ordered were 2LT and Nav/PDR. I love the car! They look positively exotic!

No problems at all with my 17 GS. I have 12,000 miles and everything is perfect. No bent wheels, no transmission problems (A8). Had the mag ride updated but can't see much difference. Wasted $350 as far as I'm concerned.

How would you know if you have cracked/bent rims? From previous posts, really the only way they find "IT" is when they pull the wheels/tires to clean/repaint or are having a tire(s) replaced when worn & the tech sees it or when they balance it. Seldom would it be so bad you'd feel vibration but MAYBE a slow leak could develop. Just saying, in MHO, there are quite a few driving with bent/cracked wheels & will never know. We are talking, usually, very fine/small cracks/bends that never show up (can't feel it) in normal driving on the street.

I know who you're talking about. I'm pretty sure it was a 2018.

Edit: Wrong, looks like it was a 2019 with chrome rims.

^^^Yep, that's her.

As far as "knowing" if your wheels are bent or cracked, from the pics I've seen here on the forum, the cracks are very obvious, and should be easily identified while looking at the wheel while the car is on a lift. The cracks are usually on the inboard edge, and pretty substantial.

I bought used.
I found a 2016 (the one in my sig.) that was purchased new by first owner in Feb. 2018.
He only put 750 miles on it in 5 months, then for some reason decided to trade in to a dealer for an Impala (go figure).
It was listed for sale here on the forum, but he was asking too high a price so I didn't pursue buying it from him.
That's when I saw a dealer nearby to him had it for sale for $6k less than he was asking on the forum.
I jumped on it, as it was like buying a new car. Still has 30 months left on B2B factory warranty, and I paid over $26k less than window sticker.
In addition, it was wrapped in Suntek protective film along with a ceramic coating on top of that, and he also had the stripe added (approx. $8k for those items).
I know it would be difficult, if not impossible to find such a deal as I got, but you can certainly find (with some patience) a very good deal on a used Vette,
as there are so many with low miles for sale. I permitted the first owner to take the biggest hit on depreciation.

As I said for testing bends I take it on some new roads and go at a high speed and it's completely smooth. I've been inspecting mine after every wash because of all threads I've seen on it. No cracks so far. Looks like new.

I should have mentioned I'm looking to get a manual, but what is the deal with the mag ride updates? I've heard that the 2019's had some update, but do the older models just get a software update to fix the issue? Does chevy charge for this? One car I'm looking at in particular is used, but not at a chevy dealer, so can't really negotiate that into the purchase and might have to do it after the fact.

Thanks,

Definitely going to get the M7, but one 2017 I'm looking at isn't at a Chevy dealer so would be hard to negotiate the upgrade as part of the purchase. Assume I could take it to a chevy dealer after the fact to get it done? Not sure of the cost then though.

Do you have any experience with the bigger dealers? Do you know if they forum members I could work with directly?

One of the used cars I'm looking at is a 2017 but not at a chevy dealer. I'll have to look up some of the threads that have pics of these cracks / bends. This would be one of my bigger concerns it seems for buying a used GS at this point. The one I found is around $56k for a 2LT with about $3k miles. Seems like a pretty good deal.

Thanks.
