Rodent attack on wheels?
#21
I would agree on curb rash. They look pretty deep to be from a rodent.

Thanks all. Only one driver so no joyriding kids. May have rubbed a curb last time out but it didn't look like normal curb rash and I would have thought there would be deeper tire scuff marks based on the extent of the wheel damage. Not saying it wasn't a curb. FWIW I have curbed a wheel or two in my day and the tires were scuffed pretty bad.
As for squirrels gnawing metal, they do it all the time. I used to have lead covered vents on my roof. The squirrels ate the lead down to the PVC. I replaced all of the vents with a different material and no more gnawing. Those little buggers will eat anything.
Will be getting the wheels fixed this week.

"In honor of jpee"
at a very tender age, I'm still learning. I have a solar motion-on light with a remote solar collector which is connected by a thin plastic coated wire. I had to replace that wire twice, until I used a plastic slip on conduit/cover---which squirrels ate--and replaced the wire again. I finally put on a steel sleeve for the entire length, about 10 feet, which is working so far (one year+).

That squirrel had concrete teeth!
Now the silly beavers sharpen their teeth on my oak tree but even they could not do that!

We'll the appear to be smarter than deer! In our twist 2 mile road to the highway both cross! Squirrels, 50% of the time will dart back if the see the car. Deer, once started or following another will run right into a car!

Classic curb rash... no rodent can damage those wheels like that...besides they don't like aluminum

At first glance I also thought that squirrels eating aluminum is pretty far fetched. A lot of what squirrels chew on is not to eat but to sharpen their teeth and to maintain the proper length of their teeth because unlike ours if left unchecked they will just keep growing longer. I've seen a lot of curb rash and if you look at the last picture, I'd say it's impossible to do that on a curb or pot hole. I think the OP is right that it's squirrels working on their teeth.

Looks like a nice slow roll along a curb in maybe a Drive-Thru of some sort.

Not seen often but near extinction is the North American RIM RAT! Chews the rim just like that. Don't be fooled thinking it is curb rash just because it looks just like curb rash.

If it’s curb rash, I don’t want to live there because since there is no rotary component to the scratches/gouges, the only way a curb could do that is to jump up and come down on the wheel. There looks to be no damage to the rim protector rib of the tire and what some are saying looks like tire damage, looks to me like water/dirt moving as tire rotated.
Strange. Maybe something in the red stripe is tasty to the little vermin?

Yes, I'm still betting on curb/pothole rash. But posts #15, 18, 19, and 20; show is that it's not impossible. Squirrels caught in our Havahart trap chew on the steel enough to leave marks. Get over it.
