Default P*ss poor build quality?

I have had my 2017 Grand Sport, 3LT, for 4 months now since new. Car's parked in the garage 99% of the time, driven maybe twice a week. Sure, it's been parked under the sun a few times, but I tried to keep it in good shape, at least, as much as possible. The top has come off several times when I want to enjoy the Southern California sunshine that I pay the paradise tax for.

Just noticed the leather on the dash near the HUD is delaminating. Not just a little, it's coming off the dash in large patches. Okay. It's a know issue, I guess I will have to suck it up and take it to the dealership.

Then this morning, went to put the targa top back on, and as I was latching the roof down, I noticed that a large portion of the roof liner has also delaminated! The liner just hung limp from the roof and you can sort of peel a small portion off easily, and as I was taking a closer look, the entire liner almost came completely off. It's like it's not even attached to the roof or whatever adhesive they use is not even remotely sticky.

I mean, I'm willing to live with some quirks and minor inconveniences because the car is fast, looks great, and is special. But this sort of shoddy craftsmanship? Does not bode well for my first American car. No offense, this type of "issues" I expect on a 10 year old German car. In fact, my old E46 had the roof liner fall apart too. But not 4 months into first ownership, for a car that's driven twice a week.

This on top of the entire dash and entertainment system just blanking out randomly...No amount of speed and drop in lap time around my favorite tracks is going to be worth it IMO.

The trim stuff is annoying but pretty easy to fix. (If it was me, I might ask for the 1LT/2LT dash pad as a replacement as it doesn't seem to have the issues of the 3LT pad.)

The intermittent loss of power to dash is more of a problem going forward. Make sure the dealer knows about it so that the tech can troubleshoot the connections while the dash is apart.

Good luck.

Sounds like your car has had some heavy sun time before you owned it with no help (dash covered - windows cracked etc).

just my guess.

whether by luck or build variance some do some don't. But if the car is garaged most times probably happens less frequently but your car was sitting on a lot in heat before you got it sounds like?

i would have to assume so. When I first looked at the car, the battery was completely dead and the tires had cracks in it from facing the sun daily.

but still, my old trusty BMW was driven daily, parked out in the sun daily, for almost 10 years before the headliner delaminated. I’ve had other cars for extended periods that was parked outside daily and never did I have this sort of problem.

You’d think they never bothered to test the durability of the adhesives if it can fail for sitting in the sun in less than 2 years.

Just be thankful it's covered under warranty (assuming it will be in that it's a 2017) as practically the entire dash has to come out at a cost of over $3000.

You're fortunate that these two defects are under warranty. If you continue to have bad stuff happen to that car, I'd advise you to trade it off for something else. Life's too short to have bad things happen left and right with a new car. I'd set my sights on a new C8, and pray more cr@p doesn't happen with this one - if I were you. 👍

Sucks that the interior didn't hold up better on a new car, but the warranty should cover it. Hopefully it won't happen again.

I'm puzzled by the defects you and others have had with the dash and head liner, as well as other common failures. Interiors aren't new. Leather and leather like manmade materials aren't new. Adhesives aren't new. Armrest padding isn't new. Sun and heat aren't new. Yet GM put inferior, problem prone materials in these places, knowing there are better materials available. Sure those materials might be more expensive but how expensive to GM are the warranty repairs and lost customer confidence. My wife's Nissan has a much more comfortable arm rest, for instance, and over 4 years has had no indentions or soft spots. My Stingray does have soft spots in all arm rests. And the Nissan cost us 1/3rd the price of my Stingray. What's up with that? The head liner is a simple fix. The dash.... not so much.

Hang in there OP, the Corvette is still an awesome car and more fun than most on the road today.

OP. The good news is that you will have new parts replacing the old sun beaten ones and you wont have the problem again if you crack those windows and throw anything over the dash if its gonna be outdoors in the sun for extended periods of time.

I bought a blue one which matches my interior and it works perfect.

The C7 provides more for the dollars spent (HP and otherwise) by far than any other sportscar in the market today.
If they used the highest quality materials thus increasing costs, then the above would most likely change. There's always compromise.

I suspect there may be more issues than what meets the eyes. They have been installing leather wrapped dash boards in the Corvette for at least 11 years so it isn't like the suppliers don't know how to make them. I suspect environmental regulations changed which forced changes in how the panels are constructed and that has caused some new teething problems.

Just because a 10 year old BMW didn't have a similar problem (did it have a leather wrapped dash?) doesn't mean much. A newer BMW if they have leather wrapped dash boards might have exactly the same issue since auto manufacturers purchase all of their sub-assemblies from basically the same companies.

Agreed. 3LT needs more preventative care than the non-leather packages. Just the way it is.

My 3LT is 4 years old (a 2014), and is my daily driver here in the hellish and relentless desert sun of Las Vegas.

In an effort to protect my 3LT dash and door leather, I have 35% tinted windows and use a fitted windshield sun shade every time I park in the sun. (my office doesn't offer covered parking, unfortunately )

Dash and door leather still look like new. Just lucky?

All that said, it's quite possible your parts were defective. (1st time I've heard of the top liner delaminating.... weird) Get the parts warranty-replaced, and take steps to protect the new parts from the sun. Hopefully, you will have as good of luck as most owners.

EDITED TO ADD:
Just out of curiousity, are you a smoker? In my experience with other cars, it seemed like if the owner smoked in the car, the headliner glue seemed affected and more likely to fail. Not judging, just looking at all possibilities.
