Default My bent rims

I had a funeral to attend in Tenn and left Tucson Az . Just as I crossed the bridge heading into Memphis I hit a pot hole that covered the entire lane. I took the car to a dealer in Jackson Tenn and sure enough 2 bent rims. They of course did not have any rims for my 17 Grand sport and not having the time to wait for them to order some I was forced to buy a set of 4 Z06 wheels. The wheels looked great so I figured ok on the 3k cost. Well on the way back while in new Mexico I hit another pot hole that again was unavoidable. The car didn't feel right after that pot hole and will take it to my local dealer on Monday. I suspect more bent wheels. This all happened on I40 which has been taken over by Simi's. It has been sometime since I did a cross country trip and it will be my last. Its a terrible what has become of our interstate system that use to be the envy of the world. Just venting.

I drove my 2017 Z06 from St Pete, Fl to Talladega for the Vettes 4 Vets annual track day. Blown retread truck tires were everywhere and one wiped out the rubber air deflector on the front of the car. The low profile makes for an inter
esting trip dodging road debris.

I hit potholes in my C5 and C6 and never bent a rim. But on my C7 Z06, I've got 4 bent rims. It's a GM design flaw.

Wow! That sucks! So far so good on my ‘16 Z06, and I live in Northeast with some of the worse roads in the country. I recently read that GM sources their wheels out to China and Mexico... Aside from the low profile and suspension contributing to these mishaps, I’m wondering if the build quality and materials use are consistent at all locations. I suspect that they’re not...

Who had such low-profile tires on earlier Vettes; I didn't and still don't on my C5. Today's tire/wheel combos are a significant part of our C7 problem, no way around it.

That sucks. I know what you mean about bad Roads. We have freeze thaw cycles daily and it destroys the roads. Then, privately maintained roads are even worse. The money isn’t properly spent to maintain. Makes you wonder whose pocket the money is going into.
The support in the wheel is on the outside only which leaves the inner wheel unsupported. Also, the wheels are very light to reduce unsprung weight and thin to make room for the large calipers. That equals weak.
If you have your mag ride set to track mode (stiff), your rims are more vulnerable to being bent.
There are companies who can straighten some bent rims.

Flying cars will solve this problem someday and those bad wheel manufacturers will get their comeuppance.

I agree, doesn't take much of an examination of these wheels and tries to determine they are designed for performance, not durability. More a case of having to give on one thing to get another than poor quality wheels.

I wonder if that was the real motivation for the new softer Magnetic Shock calibrations.

I feel your pain, the roads around here were also some of the nicest to drive on back in the 80's to mid 90's. Now they are just a major embarrassment and an accident waiting to happen for anybody with a nice ride.
