Thanks for the advice on the "forum" discount at Range Technology. Recently, I've been using the paddle shifters exclusively but sometimes it would be nice to just leave in "D".

Doing the paddle shifting gets tiresome if your driving in heavy urban traffic. The Range device will allow you to enjoy that type of driving more keeping the A8 in D.
The 8L90 in D will time shifts better than you can when approaching maximum acceleration; machines are just better at some things. Even if you don't have the Range (which I do and I highly recommend) you can still drop the transmission into drive without fear of V4 mode when under heavy acceleration.
Of course the paddles are also useful when D is selected; I often use this when descending a hill and don't want to use the brakes-especially shortly after I have cleaned the brake dust from the many surfaces of my Z06 wheels making me hate to use the brakes
I expect your father used engine braking on grades for the same reason I did so as not to toast his brakes. I use my brakes for normal stops but I am not going to ride them going downhill because the dimwit ahead of me is riding his brakes instead of down shifting as he should.
