Yes. I plug my iPod touch into the USB port behind the infotainment screen. It shows on the screen and keeps it charged.

Yep. Simple as that. I prefer a USB thumb drive though. So I copied all of my ipod tunes onto a thumb drive. The thumb drive is tiny and the performance is much better. Scrolling through songs lists, artists, albums, etc. is much faster with the USB thumb drive than the ipod. And, I dont have to remove it when I get out of the car. It stays in there all the time. But then again I have over 3000 songs on it.

Same here.

I can see no rational reason for using an iPod in the car when a USB drive is smaller, faster and far less obtrusive

I used iTunes to export the playlists (they're really nothing more than text files. For example, here's my Tom Petty. m3u playlist file

Sure, but my question is really about how do you translate that to a thumb drive? Do you just bulk copy all the songs and playlist files onto the drive? Or is there a directory structure that needs to be followed? I want to us the thumb drive like I use an iPod. Scroll through playlists, artists, etc.

Use iTunes and "export playlist" (and copy your actual music files as well)
