Default GM pricing weirdness

I was just playing around with configs on the Corvette build site. In a vert, you can choose from multiple top colors; black, grey, blue, kalahari, and red. No difference in price. That makes sense, since a top is a top, but I would not have been surprised to see a $100 upcharge or something. But ok.

Then, I get to interior options. You can get red seat belts. Cool. FOR $395? Yikes. Geez. Wow. 400 bucks for a different color seat belt, but no charge for a different color top??? Makes no sense to me.

Crazy.

Different Supplier prices? Top goes on regardless of color vs. they have to manually change the belts for dif. color?

Not really weird in context. Red seat belts are a new option only in the last couple of years. All the other options you mentioned were part of the original pricing structure and were probably negotiated with suppliers many years ago. As a new item this had to be added into the existing inventory. It effectively doubled the number of seat belt options. Naturally, if they can charge something for it, they will.

Cost has some relationship to pricing, but really pricing is pretty much its own calculation. If no one buys red belts at $400 they might come down in price, or they might disappear.

(As belts are safety-critical items there also may be costs in verifying the new material.)

If you want to see some weird pricing for options check out the Porsche configurator. $540 U.S for red seat belts and then some ridiculous prices for things that are standard on Corvette.

Porsche has gone relentlessly upmarket with its buyers. I knew a guy in the mid-1960s, college student who owned his own 356 with a ski rack (cool combo at the time). He may still be buying them but for a lot more money.

Posrche does risk their sports car buyers aging out, also, though probably less so than Corvette which is trying to get back to being cool, as in when astronauts were heroes and drove Corvettes.

Crazy.
There is an upcharge for color tops of $590.00 it's called option D30 color combo override. I am the Corvette manager at a Chevrolet dealer. Go back in and build a white convertible with red interior and a blue top that in GM's mind is a non recommend color combo so you have to pay $590 to get it. Build a blue convertible with red interior and put a blue top on it the same thing? Put a blue top on a yellow or orange car same thing Put a gray top on a orange or yellow car same thing?

Yes,,,but if you put a blue top on a blue car, grey on a grey car, or red on a red car there is no over ride fee. The fee you are talking about is the colour combination over ride fee.

When it came to buying a new C7, budgeting for it being equipped as I wanted wasn't even on my radar scope. I bought exactly what I wanted and didn't sweat what it was costing me.

And $600 for red colored calipers.
And $1000 for a carbon dash overlay.
And $2000 for sport seats.
Maybe not so weird, the red seat belts extra cost - perhaps GM is following the Porsche way if increasing profit.
