Chevrolet designed the Z51 for those people who want to take their stingray to the track and run it hard for continued amounts of time. Hence the features: bigger brakes: dry sump: gear ratios etc. Unless you will take the car to the racetrack the base stingray is fine, especially if you buy the mag ride, and then add Z51 sway bars. I bought the base car with mag ride, added the sway bars, and couldn't be happier. Of course if my budget was bigger I'd love to have a ZR!!!. You will love whichever version you end up buying, for certain.
What would it take me to get back into JDM? Godzilla or NSX. Both cars are money and take a good bit of money to get into compared to the C7 especially used. If you make the switch you will be happy for sure. Especially if you stay true to your tuner roots.
I had a 2005 Legacy GT, have driven my friend's STI, and I had BMW 228i before my Z51. Love Subarus and always wanted an STI, but I jumped to a Vette when the opportunity presented itself.
If you're.coming from an STI and want a more visceral experience every time you drive, do not even consider a base Corvette.
If you want a very connected driving experience that you can daily drive and take to the track in stock form and be pretty competitive in HPDEs in novice & average in intermediate, get at least a Z51 and add MSRC if you want. This is what I have with an M7 and no MSRC. I daily drive it.
If you want the ultimate connected feeling and the highest grip on the street and to destroy most cars on the track but is less daily driver friendly than a Z51 and has more expensive & lower options in consumables(e.g. tires, brake pads, wheels, etc), get a GS.
If you want to destroy most everyone, get a Z06.
If you want to annihilate everyone, yourself, and your wallet, get a ZR1.
That's an interesting take. I've driven my buddy's base Stingray, although not on track, and my impression of it was it's a fantastic handling car. Not as good as my Grand Sport, but for most, even street driving, it's better than 99% of the cars available on the market today (or yesterday, and maybe even well into tomorrow).
There's nothing wrong with the base Stingray's handling (nor steering, for that matter), except for the fact that it's the "worst" in the range of C7 Corvettes currently available. But that's like saying "she's the least attractive supermodel in the room" IMO.
I'd hit it.
That's exactly right. Every time I read some bogus testimony of needing a Z51, or GS, to make a corner "on rails," I roll my eyes. The Stingray with MSRC, is the epitome of being on rails. Those same BSers, claim that Stingrays don't corner unless they've got Z51 anti-sway bars must be driving their Mom's 1966 station wagons. I get a chuckle out of them......
