I made my own door sills out of a thin piece of metal & painted them replacing the OEM sticker sills that would get scratched every time a shoe hit them. I also covered the plastic door sills with leather which not only looks 100x better than the plastic but also doesn’t show any scratches or scuffs.
I bought a new OEM sill plates here on the CF for $50.00 and will replace my worn originals when necessary.
I'm with you - I consider them a wear item and will replace them when needed. I hate the way the "protectors" look. For $70 every x number of years no big deal. Interesting to note that the passenger side is worse than the driver's side...
Sill protectors are terrible....I put them on my first C7 and quickly found out that they scuffed the sill plate itself and also the black plastic inside the door frame...I quickly dumped them...on my new C7 I am using Laminex film for protection. 100 percent More Better!
About a year ago, I used 3M Paint Defender Spray Film on my door sills. The spray took some care to apply smoothly and a day's curing time. It worked well but after about a year it began to peel due to my feet contacting it when exiting the car..
Today I installed XPEL and it was easy peasy in comparison... After removing the plastic coating and carefully cleaning the sill plate, I sprayed it with Windex to allow positioning the XPEL and removing the inevitable bubbles. Installing the XPEL dry is an invitation to bubbles galore.
Total time from turning on the garage light to closing the door after installation was about 1.5 hours.
