I know it can be done as I owned a C5Z with it done before. It was cammed, blown with full exhaust, fun to start it when unsuspecting people around it...
There is no reason with today's standard electronic gobble-de-gook it could not easily be done. It would have to detect several things "set" properly to fire. No biggie that I can see.

I thought this many times. It tells you in the dash what gear you're in so it knows that. And it has an electronic parking brake so it knows if that is set. Wouldn't be hard at all for them to put it in oem
it can be done on manuals now.. Had a buddy do it on a jeep and it was so painful to engage it that he stopped using it within a couple months. you have to put it in first, take it out of first into neutral, hold break, turn on parking brake and wait till engaged for 3 to 5 seconds, let out clutch and leave running, get out the vehicle and lock the doors, then the alarm will hopefully shut the car off.. Then it will remote start "sometimes"
I love me some remote start and I have thought about it but will not be installing it on my manual
Manual Transmission Remote Car Starters Installed Safely
It all starts with a simple but important sequence when pulling into your parking spot. You will start by putting your foot on the brake. Now, while your foot is on the brake, you will engage the emergency brake. Then you take your foot off the brake pedal, and you wait three to four seconds before you turn off the ignition. When you turn off the ignition you will notice that the vehicle stays running. Now you gather up all your stuff and exit the vehicle. After the last door is closed the remote start will shut off the engine and lock the doors. This is called reservation mode. At this point, the starter knows the vehicle had to be in neutral as the engine was running when you got out. As long as no one opens any of the doors the remote starter will start your car the next time you try to activate it. You will get in and be toasty warm!
