Default Disable EDR?

Has anyone figured out how to disable the EDR (Event Data Recorder) either by cutting power wire or the wire sending data to the EDR?

Unplug it. Put a 120 ohm resistor between the two CANbus / GMLAN pins. Then deal with the fact that you have no airbags and an error light on the dash.

Oh, and your insurance will probably have some interesting things to say if you get in an accident.

Don't want to disable air bag or have error lite. Don't care what insurance would say, it is my car.
Surely someone has figured out how to keep data out of that unit.

You don't seem to understand that the EDR and airbag control module are the same thing. It's just two different names for the exact same part. You can't 'keep the data out' and still have working airbags. The airbags need the data to function.

As far as it being your car, you really think your insurance company won't complain about paying out for injuries after you've disabled a critical safety device? Come on now.

I don’t think this thread is going to go the way the OP intended, but good luck.
Way too much oversight in this world for those of us who prefer our privacy.

What can EDRs record?

The data recorded by an EDR varies by manufacturer and may record:
  • Vehicle Speed (~5 seconds before impact)
  • Engine Speed (~5 seconds before impact)
  • Brake Status (~5 seconds before impact)
  • Throttle Position (~5 seconds before impact)
  • State of Drivers’ seat belt switch (on/off)
  • Passenger air bag enabled or disabled state (on/off)
  • SIR Warning Lamp status (on/off)
  • Time from vehicle impact to air bag deployment
  • Ignition cycle count at event time
  • Ignition cycle count at investigation
  • Maximum delta V for non-deployment event
  • Delta V vs. time for frontal air bag deployment event
  • Time from vehicle impact to time of maximum delta V
  • Time between non-deployment and deployment event (if within 5 seconds)
Sorry if I don't give a ****.......

You don't have a choice. As Jeff V mentioned it's all part of the airbag SDM (Sensing and Diagnostic Module) which controls deployment of airbags, monitors the passenger presence system and is on the data line with nearly every other module in the car.

You don't think you'd care what insurance says until you get in a bad accident and you or your passenger aren't covered for medical due to your gross negligence in defeating a major safety system of the vehicle.

That recorder isn't there to record what you're doing and there is nobody monitoring it while you drive around. It's a cover your *** move by every vehicle manufacturer to protect them when some jackass blows through a red light drunk, hits a bus full of nuns and then says the vehicle's brakes failed, seat belts failed etc.

Conversely, if you're drag racing someone and you wreck into some innocent bystander, then I hope they subpoena your EDR and ruin your life with the evidence.

I have to bet that some red neck somewhere has rigged up a "Mission Impossible" "This module is going to self-destruct in 30 seconds..." device that goes off after air-bag deployment and dissolves the module in question. Ask Hillary - she would know how to bleach-bit it.

It can also save your butt after an accident where the recorder proves you weren't doing anything wrong those few seconds before a crash. Say when it comes down to your word Vs the LEO you just had an accident with and who is blaming you.

You just described my 32-year-old Ferrari - only concessions to creature comfort: power windows and AC. Unlike KenHorse's description though I have brilliant handling, marvelous paint....
