Fyi: I needed a phone holder that had wireless charging. So i took one from a car i no longer have a samsung ep-hn9101. Took the back off glued it to a pro clip and now i have a phone dock that rigid and secured with wireless charging. I hope this helps others;
One handed operation, since it opens automatically via a motion sensor. Cool! Works for iPhone X/XS Max/XR/8 Plus/Galaxy S9/S9+/S8+ LG G6/V30. Fits my iPhone XS Max perfectly. Here is a Youtube that shows it in action;
(The audio announcement you hear is my Blackvue dashcam. This install is on my 4Runner, but I have thesame setup in my Corvette)
This mount came with a vent clip style mount, which I did not use. I combined the following;
- my existing Proclip base mount
- an extension plate (Proclip) which already had
- an angle block (also from Proclip) just to angle the phone towards me a little bit
- and a small piece of sheet metal
I drilled holes in the right places on the sheet metal to mount to my existing base, and then drilled a 7/8 inch hole to accommodate the Insten mount. The 7/8 hole needs just a small amount of filing. On the back of the Insten mount there is a round threaded post, and a plastic nut is on the vent mount. That is how I attached the mount to the sheet metal. See pics for more detail. The nut is held to the vent clip that you need to cut off. Cut where the red arrows are in the last pic. Keep the nut, throw the vent mount away.
I'm happy with the result, and love the cool factor. The holder grips the phone firmly, but if you shut off the car, you can still remove the phone from the mount without power.
I plug my phone in each time and use Android Auto & Waze, no need for wireless charging. I can't wait until Android Auto works via Bluetooth, then wireless charging would be a home run.

Actually no help at all without pictures. Sounds interesting.
I like this set up. Any issues with it being too sensitive and dropping the phone?
Sure seems very solid. My 4Runner is a pretty stiff ride, never had an issue. The again, not going offroad or seriously road racing, so... Yeah, it holds the phone firmly.

If you look on Amazon, you can find Carplay wireless adapters that will Bluetooth so there is no hardwire in order to connect your phone to Carplay. they have them both for Apple and Android. I plan to get one soon and look into this wireless charging too.
Maybe it's me but I don't get the "wireless" part. You have your end clip wired into the same port that I use for my wired set up. The only difference I see is your set up has the other end going into the phone holder while my wired set up has the other end going into the phone.
What am I missing?

Not so bad with the USB-C but with the older USB, sometimes the plug end wears out. Also you have to get it in just right or you might damage the port on the phone. This way, I don't have to plug it in. Just drop it on and it charges. Much easier when it is dark.
