Can you elaborate on this a little bit? The car side of the app really shouldn't need updating unless something is broken or there's a major change in how it interfaces with the phones. Updating the head unit generally requires a dealer visit.
I'm curious about this as well. Android auto was recently massively updated and my phone app was updated but connecting to the car still yields the same interface.

Same here... I even removed, cleared my cache and re-installed... No change.
So I did some digging...turns out the update I got recently wasn't the new one. The new one with the updated interface is version 4.5.59, I'm on 4.4.59
It looks like the rollout of the new version is occurring over the next few weeks. Depending on your phone you may be able to access it otherwise you just have to wait. I currently have no option to update yet.
A new headunit will not be required. Once you get the 4.5.59 update you are good to go.
He is talking about the new AA app... it is an independent app, it is NOT a headunit usecase.
the update is for the App, Google had changed the app interface and more, it is irrelevant from the head unit in our cars. the head unit remain the same.
You can force the update...
Download this release: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...-apk-download/
once downloaded, install.
then go to settings --> apps and notifications --> See all apps --> Android Auto --> Storage --> Clear storage.
Once done, relaunch AA, go through the prompts --> Settings --> and tick the "Try the new android auto".
Enjoy.

Thank you very much for this. I can't find the installation once the file is downloaded. I've followed all other instructions and it just loads the old version. I'm using samsung S10

You need to ensure your phone allow install from unknown sources and the downloaded file will be in your downloads folder.
It does look nice. Sorry for the cruddy photos. I had to use an old tablet since my phone won't take photos while Android Auto is active. I'll play with it some more tomorrow on my way to work.
