EZ Pass and bin buddy
Where do you have your EZ pass? Mine is on the bin buddy from Sandyego behind the screen.
Just received no read violations on AC expressway in NJ and the bridge to PA. So on this trip none of the scanners were able to read my EZ pass.
On earlier trip through the same route the EZ pass scanned just fine. The only difference is the installation of the bin buddy. Wondering it it’s interfering with the EZ pass.
Anyone experiencing something similar?

I don't even carry the transponder in the car. The plates are linked to my ez pass account. Cameras scan the plate, then reference data base, it ties to my account, done.
I didn't believe it when I first heard it, but I've been doing it for 2+ years now, and no issues. I've checked my account on line, and see all the tolls have been paid.

My "large" EZ pass reads just fine from in the cubby for five + years that its been there. Bin-buddy top-shelf. for (almost as many) years. Never had to take it out.
I just received a "smaller" version, and it doesn't read as well.
Not sure what is going on.

It appears from your post you have the EZ Pass on top of the bin buddy shelf. Is that correct? If underneath the shelf that puts a metal shield between it and the reader which could interfere with reading.

I just toss it on the dash when I go through any toll booths.

My SunPass is stuck onto the rear hatch glass - very top corner, drivers side... works fine. You can't seen it from inside or outside the car.

Read advice below as the battery slowly loses power over time.
“Does EZ Pass transponder have battery?
The E-ZPass battery is sealed inside the transponder. You can't replace the battery yourself, but it should last about a decade before you need to replace the transponder. There are more than 30 million transponders in use, and drivers in the Washington region get them from many different transportation agencies.Nov 16, 2016”
PS: And that assumes you mount it on the windshield not hidden by shielding inside the car.

Also, I've heard that the signal will not go through carbon fiber, so it would be blocked under the hood or in the center console if you have the CF roof.
We have the transparent top and the Illinois IPass seems to read of from the console.

Yes it reads thru the black part. Or at least the Florida version of the technology does. I imagine all these toll passes use the kind of radio signal to communicate as many of them are now cross state compatible.
The real beauty of the rear hatch location is its totally hidden. You'll only see it if the hatch is opened and even then if the pass is black (paint it) it blends in so well nobody will notice. If you want a full stealth install the interior plastic trim at the very top of the hatch pops off easily and a small pass might just fit in there. I put an aftermarket SiriusXM antenna inside this trim piece when the OEM unit died (for reasons I'll never understand). This trim piece just hides where the rear defroster wires connect up.
Another hiding spot - if you don't have the PDR camera - is the plastic trim in front of the rear view mirror. Pull it down (once again it easily pops off) and see if your pass fits. Mine was too big for this location.
I think carbon fiber will block it. I know the CF blocks the SiriusXM signal I temporarily put an antenna under the hood for testing but got no signal there so I had to move it to the rear hiding spot.

I’m the OP and here’s an update.
My EZ pass transponder doesn’t work when it is on the top shelf of the bin buddy behind the screen. I tested this several times with and without the bin buddy installed going from Philadelphia to the Jersey shores via the AC expressway.
With the bin buddy installed my EZ pass transactions posted using my license plate. Without it the transactions posted using the ID of my transponder. In a no read situation, the only thing EZ pass can do is to search and match your license plate for the transaction. Given everything the same the logical explanation is that the bin buddy is somehow interfering with the ability of the transponder from being read.
For those of you with a similar setup check your EZ pass transaction history and please post your finding.
If your plate is registered to your account it may not matter. But it’s good to know why your transponder is not working.
The bin buddy is a great product, perhaps Sandyego Design can produce a nonmetallic version that won’t interfere with the transponder.

I just got off the phone with ez pass customer service in NY and they said you don't need the transponder in the car as long as your plate and car are associated with the transponder. The camera will match your plate to your account and it will be deducted. I was searching all over for the right place to put my transponder but I now know I no longer need it. Great!
