New to A6 & want to know about the ride control.
In ECO the trans acted strange, constantly shifting. I changed to Tour which stopped the the constant changing of gears & it worked much better. I've read about the Range Device but don't see the need. Am I missing something???
My driving consists mostly of 2 lane country highways, very little if any congestion.
In "Eco" mode the computer keeps the car in V4 mode for longer periods to maximize mpg's, so you will at times feel the engine switching back to V8 mode. I'm guessing that's what you experiencing. In "tour" the engine goes into V4 less. I never use my A8 in the Eco mode unless I'm on a long flat interstate, and that's rarely. I'm sure you've read the problems with the earlier A8's, torque converter, shudders, etc. The Range seems to help the A8 by keeping the engine from switching into the V4 mode. The A6 didn't have any of those problems, so the Range doesn't seem to be needed unless one just wants the car in V8 mode all of the time.

I went ahead and installed the Range AFM on my car just so it would stay in V8 mode all the time. Did I absolutely need it due to issues with the tranny - no, but now I will not worry about it either.
It sounds like it was NOT the trans shifting back and forth but perhaps the car going in and out of ECO mode. I personally can't stand eco mode and I did not buy a corvette to try and squeak out every ounce of fuel mileage. I ran mine in tour mode mostly and in "manual" mode thereby locking the v4 mode out. If you do not want V4 and have an A6/A8 trans then put the shifter into manual mode and use the paddles to shift. Otherwise your car will go into V4 regardless of tour/track/sport ect.
