Default C7 front air dam

Noticed when washing C7 my front air dam came half way off. I then totally removed it. Question...What is this for?

When Corvettes were first designed as bottom breathers this was to assist with air intake. Looking under Vette I don't see any air intake. Is this just for looks or warning of objects? Is it okay to leave off.?

The side sections are still on.as far as looks go.

Thank you

The last bottom feeder was the C5.

The air dam not only helps with air flow to the correct areas for cooling, it helps with aerodynamics.

Added extra bonus: Early warning signal that you might be about to scrape something actually important.

Au contraire!

The C6 is a bottom feeder

Please 'splain what you mean.

It doesn't have an intake from below. It gets air from the under hood area, which comes primarily from the grill. And it's then taken into the engine from there.

If you look under the nose, you'll see there is an opening (I remember having a screen on mine to reduce the amount of road crap that was pushed into the radiator)

Technically, the C6 was both a bottom and front feeder

None of that air came directly into the intake. Sure, go through a puddle, and it will sit and gurgle, but won't make it into the intake. Neither the C6 and C7 have a sealed engine compartment from under the car, but just because that under-car air will eventually make it Ito the air intake, doesn't make it a bottom feeder like the C5, which would shake in it's boots when confronted witht a couple of inches of sitting water.

Call it what you will, it's kind of like me saying that the 2014 Z51 was ordered and sold as a separate model (which it was, BTW). Doesn't make in really true.

Right, not the intake but the radiator was fed from the bottom (and you'll notice the C6 air dam is BEHIND that opening). And because it was a bottom feeder, the radiator would collect all sorts of crud from the road and needed to have its fins cleaned out every so often.

As I said, I had a screen on the under opening to reduce the amount of crud. In fact, have a look at C6 accessories - many companies offer one

I think those are dealer installed items, mine was never installed. It was laying in the back cargo area in a sealed clear plastic wrapper when I took delivery. The dealer offered to install it but I declined. My C6 had one and it got beat up and scraped a lot on speed bumps and driveways. I don’t want to hear it scrape on my C7.

Whatever it does, if anything - cooling, breathing, aero - my car performs flawlessly for how I use it. I don’t miss it.

Aerodynamics and to help push air to the appropriate spots for cooling, also a very minor mpg increase on highways. It isn't necessary. Mine was half torn off as well and I removed it, it won't harm anything for street driving. It also should be removed if you have stage 2 or 3 aero.

You can search for more info in a couple of threads, including an in depth PDF by one of the CF contributors.
We were told at Spring Mountain that it improves aerodynamics at high speeds (~140+ mph). We also learned that adding the full rear spoiler eliminates the need for the forward center air dam..
