Sorry about your car but take some of the insurance settlement and spend the $40 to get your CarFax report

(besides, "2g1fp22p2117506" isn't a valid VIN)

He crashed his car and doing all of the repairs himself and not filing an insurance claim I presume.... He did a beautiful job doing his wide conversion himself so he obviously have the skills.

Sharing CarFax subscriptions is forbidden by the EULA of the CarFax subscriber. Just sayin'

If you didn't have the Open Source movement (Free to share and improve) you wouldn't have the internet. Indeed you probably wouldn't have this forum either. The vast majority of the internet, programming languages, cell phones, etc. is built on Open Source software; things like Linux, many programming languages, Android, are all based on or substantially use Open Source in their software. Hell, your Vette uses Open Source. It's not software theft when the software is shared as Open Source.

Given a specific software task or app, I can usually find a free, Open Source version that usually has way better support anyway as that app that that small developer produced is his baby and he's passionate about the functionality and the performance of his creation. On the proprietary, totally driven by profit and marketing people, you tend to get inferior software and bad support. With an Open Source app you can email the developer directly and they will often respond personally. With proprietary software if you can email support at all, all you'll get is a ticket number and years of waiting.

Open source is one thing.

I agree that intellectual property is one thing but if we are talking about someone who perhaps have a Carfax subscription where they get unlimited or a specified number of reports that they paid for. Is it really theft if someone gave the OP or anyone a Carfax report gratis?

I have had a subscription to Carfax and at a point and time didn't really need the unused reports and think it is my right to give a report to someone if I so chose to be it a friend, relative, colleague, stranger etc.... That would be my right! Perhaps we are speaking of different scenarios and just misunderstanding.... Nevertheless, glad the OP got what he was looking for while he repairs his car.

Ok, I asked to confirm the site position.

Where I was an admin and here have been contacted by Carfax lawyers, thus the "No sharing through the forum" position because of the Carfax EULA. Apparently, there was a change in the EULA and it is not a swift death from a lawyer any more.

So, if someone has a Carfax account or access and is willing to do a courtesy lookup for someone on this forum, our position is "Fine, run the VIN and share the results".

I checked with the admins to make sure of the correct response for this forum.

Yeah, but you said "software thieves" not "intellectual property thieves" so that's what I commented on. Under most Open Source licenses you are required to make your intellectual property shareable. IOW if you wanted to charge for your intellectual property then you can't be Open Source.

Good info.

But why ask for a CarFax report on a Camaro in C7 Gen?

The original poster owns a C7 and recently had an accident as mentioned in this thread and he wanted to purchase a car to drive while he repairs his C7 so since he is a C7 owner and forum member I presume he figured he would ask on the forum that he is a member of if that make sense....

I remain very skeptical of CarFax. I have had two vehicles, one was a company vehicle, and one was a brand new Honda Accord. Both went to a body shop. I took care of my company vehicle, of which the damage was minor (about $500.00) and the Honda was turned into our insurance company after a collision with a deer, and it went through the normal reporting process.
Neither vehicle ever showed showed any damage in any CarFax report, even a couple of years later. Treat any CarFax report with skepticism.
