Car is at dealership now, they have replaced the infotainment head unit screen with a new one. Problem still exists where screen will go black, and, or freeze up not allowing any selections between settings. These were the symptoms when I brought it in originally.
Serivice advisor is getting GM Tech Assistance involved tomorrow.
Anyone know what I can look forward to as a fix?
My '14 has this problem occasionally but its not the screen, nor the radio module itself... based on my research on this forum it is the HMI module. I don't want to jinx myself, but over the last two weeks it has been working perfectly.
Interested in what the dealer does to resolve your case. Good luck.

Unit was reprogrammed, not sure if that involves the HMI or not, but same problem symptoms still existed.
I will post a remedy, car has been at dealership now a week
Dealer replaced HMI module, I picked the up car this morning. My fix was a new screen infotainment unit and the HMI module.
Both service advisors said they have had numerous problems with their GM infotainment products across the line up.
Glad I had the extended CPO warranty, as this was a very expensive fix.
Keeping my fingers crossed,
thanks for the reply’s !

I wonder if its just policy to replace both? Was the screen really necessary or would the HMI module alone fix things?
Also for the record mine hasn't locked up in nearly a month. So it fixed itself? I did run multiple hot laps at Sebring so maybe that scared it into behaving correctly
Not sure about policy. Dealer evidently thought screen was initial problem, and mentioned they have serviced quite a few. I say this because you would think they would know how to go about a fix. GM tech got involved last week and approved a HMI module replacement also at this time.
My system was very sporadic over the last 2 plus years, until I just got tired out it going out more consistently as of late.
Personally this infotainment system scares me, as I’ve started shopping extended warranties, till the C8 becomes more available. Hopefully the new models will be improved.

That is my worry. I don't think GM understands the root cause here, they just see a dead screen and replace it. This is like buying a new computer because suddenly you can't type, then later you learn the keyboard was just unplugged
Based on my research these screens do have problems (especially the early years like my 2014) - as they go up and down a small blue wire becomes damaged. If that happens then yes the screen will be dead but the other audio controls (on the steering wheel) should work. The screen is just an interface unit, like a monitor or keyboard, its not the brains (computer) behind the infotainment system... that's the HMI module.
The reason I mentioned this is by far the HMI module is easier to replace so it shocks me that GM tears the whole dash apart attempting fix not once but twice! The labor hours and risk of damage when replacing the screen is very high, where as swapping an HMI unit appears to be a piece of cake in comparison
Not sure about the root cause,,but agree with your computer keyboard analogy.
Screen and all audio controls including steering wheel were inoperative In my case. I’m sure it was a labor, and time intensive fix.
You would think our dealership network would know how to sequence and go about diagnosing such problems.
