I'm glad I came across this thread lol........here's my story. I bought a '16 1LT/Z51 last Aug the guy I bought it off of advertised Nav as one of the selling points something I was going to get or I wasn't interested in buying it. In my excitement on the initial test drive and at any other point in the negotiations I did not check the Nav I just took his word for it....not smart I know! So after trying for 30mins or so to get it to work one afternoon it wouldn't ugh did a
little research checking the invoice and calling the seller back he assured me it was a factory option he thought it had he said he used it?? I found the code sticker under the back carpet mat and it's showing no factory Nav even tho there is an Nav option on the info screen?? So my question is I have an Android phone if I download the Android auto app it will do everything I need for short/long trips? Checked on Infotainment.com and Navtool but both seem to pricey for not using them on a daily basis......thx guys

You didn't say what the code is; if it's "I05", then you don't have NAV. If it's "I06", you have NAV and something isn't working correctly. Yes, if you download the Android Auto app, you have everything you need for short and long trips. Once you load your route/destination, all the maps needed are downloaded to your phone in case you lose service along the route. I don't have factory NAV and use Apple CarPlay for "Google Maps" and it meets all my navigation needs.
One can do this [load the entire country into Google Maps]. Yes, it would require multiple “boxes” to cover very large areas . .
No, one cannot load the entire country into Google Maps without a great deal of work. The load box is only big enough to include a small portion of a given state. Thus, if you travel a good deal, you are left with loading in maps before each trip. I thus prefer a Garmin for travel which requires zero prep. If you do not travel, Google Maps is a great alternative.
Again, the point is that many people don’t seem to realize that you can download maps and that a constant mobile data connection is not required.
A good point. The only downside is Google ages out downloaded offline maps and they expire after a bit.

I do not understand why you are hung up on this. Many people travel a good deal. I am merely one of them.

Early 2016 models only support Apple CarPlay (not Android Auto) from the factory BUT the hardware is there to use Android Auto, it just requires a software update from the dealership (which they typically charge you for). Sorry that the previous owner lied to you about your vehicle having factory navigation, but Google Maps is superior in nearly every way and I speak from experience as my 17 Z51 has the factory navigation that I’ve only used a time or two out of curiosity. The one thing that I like better about factory nav is that it projects the directions onto the HUD.

You categorically stated “one cannot do this” in regards to downloading the entire country, which is false. You CAN do this, it is just beyond the effort that you wish to invest, which is certainly less than the “hours of kludging” that you claimed. You DO NOT have to do this before every trip. It is a ONE TIME exercise to choose the areas that you want to download and from that point on the phone will automatically download any updates for the areas that you have selected.

I know squat about this but didn't I see in here that the download "expires" and deletes? You are saying that it doesn't expire because it automatically updates an older version. I like your version better. Losing my work irritates the lizard snot out of me!

Just checked it is in fact a I05......that's what I thought no factory Nav

If your phone never connects to WiFi the downloads eventually expire, I believe the default limit is 30 days.

It is an early model with a build date of 2/16.....looks like I'm striking out in every aspect of this thread lol! I guess off to the "stealership" for an upgrade ugh??
There is a setting in offline maps to allow automatic updates. I keep this setting turned on and the maps stay updated and I don’t typically open google maps on my phone manually as Android Auto starts it up automatically. That is to say, I haven’t observed if it happens as soon as the app opens or if the software updates in the background at some set interval when WiFi is on. I do know that you can simply open the offline maps tab on google maps to manually trigger updates at any given time if you wish.

On my recent trip to California, I went to update my offline maps as there were a lot of sketchy areas in those deserts. When I did one of the maps said "Expiring on <date>". There was no indication that it meant "it's expiring but don't worry I'll update it". True it also didn't say "it's expiring and I will delete it" but that was the assumption that I made. Another here said there was a setting to automatically update the offline maps. Praytell where is this setting? Google to the rescue! https://support.google.com/maps/answ...DAndroid&hl=en
I went into the google maps APP.
Hit the 3 little horizontal bars on the top left of the screen
Tapped Off Line Maps
Hit the "gear" in the top right of Offline maps screen
Voila!
Automatically
or
Manually
Choice of WiFi only
or
wifi & Mobile Network
Screw googling the answer! I brailled it on my iPhone and I was nice enough to post the answer on the forum .

A lot of info here. Now that I’m thouroughly confused let me ask this question. I retired at the end of December and in a few weeks we want to get away from the cold, snow ice . So if I want to go from WNY to hopefully sunny warm Fla. Using my GMC Sierra navigation I should down load route/ directions to my IPhone then send to truck navigation correct? Then what about this map data thing . How do I do this so I have maps if in no cell area ? Hoping I said all this right . I just did what was stated above about google maps update automatically on iPhone. Keep in mind I not a tech person.

Wow! What actually happened was that I was sitting at my computer with two large monitors and a keyboard, with which I am very adept. True my phone was sitting there on it's charging station and I could have whipped it out, unlocked it, started GM, and searched for the answer there. Or, I could simply hit Ctrl-T and type in the question and viola - Google answered. Yes I could have copied and pasted the answer after reading it thoroughly and summarized it or I could have simply pasted the URL (teach a man to fish and all).
BTW I'm not exactly young either but to me, providing the answer in a URL was the better method. Sorry, you didn't like it. Must be something to do with that emoji you posted of the angry man with the cane... Next, you'll be saying "Get off my lawn!".
I might have found my own answer to my question. Regarding map data. I went on google map tap 3 bars then off line maps then tapped custom map . Then downloaded map and kept moving map and downloading. Is this how it’s done ?
