Trying to remember about when the current year navigation update usually goes on sale.

As I recall, toward the end of the year. I expect others can be more helpful.

From what I have seen, the update usually is on sale in the fall and goes to the end of the year. I bought mine in December 2018 and it was on sale until 12/31/18. Got it for $99 each for two cars.

Curious who actually uses their navigation....I always just use my iPhone which is much more accurate and a substainally easier interface

I agree. I use my Samsung 100% of the time when I need navigation. I have used the nav a few times in conjunction as a novelty to see how it compares.

Really not all that good since it doesn't say street names or have traffic unless you pay. Think it's still cool to have in case my phone is lost but that would be a rare case.

Yep, with Apple Carplay and Google Maps and Waze, there is zero reason to use onboard nav.

yeah, it’s kinda funny...used to be having nav in cars was a premium feature....now it’s more of a hassle to use instead of the phone interface...my wife just got a new Buick Enclave and it’s nav is total garbage

I still prefer the in dash.....while the phone nav works well, it does not communicate with GPS direct but via cell signal. With that I have been in spots in AZ and NV where there is no cell signal, thus no nav from phone. Also if you don't have unlimited data these apps eat up packets at alarming rates. If you are driving for 7-8 hrs, you may start getting warnings and increased bills. The other beauty on in dash is how well it interacts with every piece within the car. Radio lowers, heads up shows in car Nav, etc. Phones work well, but to me it is what I call "poor mans nav", a nice substitute, and great if you re driving a rental or other peoples cars.

OP asked about NAV update.
Standard placement of comments on why a Phone Map system is better/cheaper/fashionable/the rage etc.

December is when the NAV updates go on sale.

Here's a few reasons:
  1. You're cell phone battery is dead
  2. You don't have your cell phone
  3. You neglected to download offline maps for the area you have driven to.

Is the $100.00 update for just one car, or can it be used on two vehicles?

One. Updates are VIN specific.

False. From https://www.androidcentral.com/how-d...-work-my-phone:
GPS is a radio navigation system. It uses radio waves between satellites and a receiver inside your phone to provide location and time information to any software that needs to use it. You don't have to send any actual data back into space for GPS to work; you only need to be able to receive data from four or more of the 28 satellites in orbit that are dedicated for geolocation use.
With that I have been in spots in AZ and NV where there is no cell signal, thus no nav from phone.
As a Phoenician who often drives to places like NV, I assure you that you can definitely use the nav to navigate from the phone without cell signal. What you cannot do is interrogate mapping data (i.e. locate the next gas station) unless you have downloaded that mapping data for offline use.

Also if you don't have unlimited data these apps eat up packets at alarming rates. If you are driving for 7-8 hrs, you may start getting warnings and increased bills.
Who doesn't have unlimited data now a days? Anyway, the "data" you speak of is for finding places on a map (if you haven't already downloaded mapping data for offline use) and stuff like traffic. And, if you are offline, GM even tells you that you are offline and it cannot provide up to date traffic.

The other beauty on in dash is how well it interacts with every piece within the car. Radio lowers, heads up shows in car Nav, etc. Phones work well, but to me it is what I call "poor mans nav", a nice substitute, and great if you re driving a rental or other peoples cars.
Don't know about you but using AA and GM does load the radio for turn by turn audible directions, shows in the car nav, etc. The one thing it doesn't do (and AFAICT this is General Motors fault) is show the turn by turn in the HUD.

Cell phone/CarPlay sucks. Limited cellphone coverage equals limited iPhone navigation. The factory installed system works extremely well.

You're correct - Apple Maps sucks (from what I hear but I also have heard that Apple Maps has gotten a lot better) as does the iPhone (personal opinion). If limited cell coverage equals limited iPhone navigation you could try two different things. One would be to switch to Android where such things are not a problem and the other would be to use Google Maps and offline maps where limited cell coverage is not (as much of) an issue as it seems the iPhones and Apple Maps don't support the offline maps concept. (BTW neither does Waze on Android).

I've said this many times, all GPS nav systems pretty much work equally well (provided they have the mapping data available). The real differentiator, the real way to evaluate how well a navigation system works is not just getting from point A to point B rather it's things like how easy it is to get the nav system to recognize the destinations (voice recognition, POI depth, etc), whether it supports multiple stops, easy ways to quickly locate detours like "Find gas", etc., traffic avoidance and re-routing, lane guidance for exits, etc. IOW "navigate from point A to point B" is just basic.

For day to day driving I like having the onboard navigation as is simpler than fiddling with the iPhone and CarPlay
On road trips I set up the iPhone/CarPlay with either maps or Waze or GasBuddy

Default Nav updates or highway robbery?

Ref factory nav "updates", I have purchased updates for both my '11 Mustang GT and my C7 and IMO the $160 retail price is legalized robbery.
In two "updates" on the Mustang and one on the 'vette the new and improved maps failed to include significant changes to I-15 in Las Vegas and CA 168 in Commiefornia that were at least two years old... Given the frequency and accuracy of "new" data I decided that I will buy it every three or so years using the end of the year "discount-"...
