ok I will be picking up a 2017 in north carolina tomorrow ,and driving it back to michigan , a person told me that the cars down there has different anifreeze than the cars in michigan ,he said I should take it in when I get back and have it flushed and have new put in for the colder temperature ,does this sound right? thanks Bill
Maybe he was trying to tell you that the factory 40% Dexcool / 60% water mix is only good to -18F and that you should use 50/50 Dexcool and water for even lower temps.
If you park outside in a Michigan winter this may be relevant to you:
Ron
From the owner's manual:
Use a mixture of 40% DEX-COOL
coolant and 60% clean, drinkable
water. If using this mixture, nothing
else needs to be added. This
mixture:
. Gives freezing protection down
to −28 °C (−18 °F), outside
temperature.
. Gives boiling protection up to
129 °C (265 °F), engine
temperature.
. Protects against rust and
corrosion.
If ambient temperatures are
anticipated below −28 °C (−18 °F),
make sure a proper mixture ratio of
50% DEX-COOL coolant and 50%
clean, drinkable water is used.
Are you taking 75N? Some sections, when your enter MI are ridiculously bad. Be careful with those tires, watch out for the craters (that started out as potholes 4 years ago)
thanks guys for all your help,I have to be alittle careful ,cause im sure it has the summer tires on it!!
Yep, if you lived in parts of Canada, where it gets to -40 C=F nothing will help except plugging it in with a block heater as folks do there!
Now the person who told you the BS about coolant might also say can't drive with summer tires below 40F or they will crack. That is also BS. Traction does decrease below about 50F. When below 40F I put it in Weather mode until I drive about 5 miles and the tires heat from driving. I seldom have to drive when it's below 35F BUT did once when it was 24 F outside. Just was more careful. Tested braking when the car sat at 30F for several hours and all was fine. IMO stopped as good as SUV's and Pick-Ups! NOT as good as when it's 60+F BUT that pulls you out of your seat and NO SUV or Pick-up can come close! If you will be driving frequently when 35 to 40 F or less, buy all season tires!
