Default Emissions Testing - not ready

So I went to get my 14 Auto Vert tested today (Arizona). They could not test it as the Catalyst, O2 Sensor, Heated 02 read "Not Ready". He said there were no codes and my CEL is not on. He told me I needed to drive it and gave me a set of drive instructions. Why would I need to drive it around more than I already do. It was about a 20ish minute drive over to the testing place. I do have the Range plugged in and I did have the top down. I don't see what either would have to do with it. I have not had the batter disconnected and do put 4-500 miles a month on it. Currently has 26000 miles. Any ideas?

Remove the Range, drive it for a good drive and you'll pass.

From what I've read on the forum I'd say it's about a 99.9% chance the Range device is the culprit. I have one and love it, but many said that even though it doesn't cause CEL or codes it will cause the "not ready" problem. I set a reminder on my phone to unplug it a couple of weeks (I think) before the emissions test is due.

eboggs beat me to it!

Same here on my 2008 Silverado with a Range. It failed on “not ready”. I unplugged the Range. Did some normal driving for 2 weeks. It passed.

Unfortunately, I don't have a couple weeks to drive it around as the plates expire next Friday. I will get some miles in it today and this weekend and fingers crossed for Monday.

Here in Texas, sometimes they'll let ya slide with one system showing not ready...hopefully the miles you get on it will be enuff to get all systems "PASSED"
Good luck!

Have you disconnected the battery or had a dead battery lately? This will clear the READY codes. You will need multiple drive cycles to get parameters back to the READY state. A cheap code reader or courtesy check at an auto parts store can see these parameters.

The issue with the Range, and “not ready” doesn’t set any codes. It just fails on “not ready”.

My code reader app will display the vehicle page with the emissions sensors showing Ready / Not Ready. I'm using a bluetooth dongle with Torque Lite.

Removing the range and driving about 100 miles city/hwy did the trick. It was a beautiful day for some top down driving anyway. Haha. Thanks again, just have to remember to remove it a week ahead of next time.

I had mine tested this week, and did the same before going in for the test. Passed without issue.

I believe it is 50 miles for that cycle in the ecm. But why not make sure you double it and head back. It'll be fine.

So I'm guessing that no one seems to be concerned with the "Not Ready" issue that using a Range device causes? I have to assume that your emissions system is always not ready and maybe could cause issues with your cats? If it's not a big deal, why can the vendor fix the issue?

The folks running Range devices are the genie pigs and we'll see down what the long term affects are to your cats and emission system. Might be nothing..... But 2 new cats would probably hit you for about 4k. And if GM found these messages and you have an emission issue.... you may be on your own.

Lab rats enjoy......

The cats are doing their thing regardless of monitor status.

From 2000 on, at least in kalifornia, all monitors must have been run in order to pass the test. Note that a pending code, as long as the mil is not on, is ok. 1999 and older vehicles are allowed to have one monitor not completed. In order to get all the monitors to run, you must at least once do a cold start with the tank approximately half full. Can't remember which monitor it is that has that requirement but its probably the evap system. Also, the monitors run in a certain sequence, so if one hasn't run yet then the remaining will also not be run or attempted.

Ok folks, I have the same issue. Also have a 2014 convertible and I disconnected the range in the line. I also had 41 fuse pulled. Looks like I know what I need to do. I'll respond next week to let everybody what happens. Thanks for posting this and the replies.

Can't pass the inspection with the range unit plugged in, simple as that. The best thing to do is take out the range and set an appointment to be tested a good week after you remove the range. Pass the test and stick the range back on the car.

There is no choice on this issue.

Its the range for sure--just happened to me. I forgot about it, got the not ready codes. Unplugged and drove around on and off for about 4 days (about 50 miles). Passed with flying colors w/out range. Plugged it back in before I left the inspection place.

you'll be fine!!

I passed on Saturday. After I sent this original message, I hooked up my own reader to see the same three parameters blinking. I checked after about 40 miles and they no longer blinked. So if you have a code reader, even a simple one, that is how you can tell.
