Specific question around 2014 z51 car, I see and understand how to change the engine sound management and steering, but is there some type of update that can be done to further adjust the suspension in different driving modes, or change the engine sound management by each driving mode rather than just on/off?
Unfortunately there's nothing like that. I really wish there was. I know the Camaro for instance has a suspension customization option. So the software supports it. It's just disabled on the Corvette for some reason.
damn you'd think it'd be easy enough to download a new software to adjust those things and it wouldn't be a hardware change or anything that difficult. Oh well... fuse pull it is... sorry neighbors I tried!
Also sadly it seems GM doesn't make any of their software updates retroactive on the platform. For example the '14s are stuck with the Auto / Off exhaust setting instead of the Stealth, Tour, Sport and Track settings that the '15s got. Same with the configuration changes made to the DIC, HUD tilt adjustment and other software tweaks.
On the bright side us '14 owners got HD radio and the ability to rewind audio playback later on GM actually removed these features
This stuff certainly isn't easy, and I'm not saying people should do it for free. But it bugs me that I need to pay $500-600 for hardware and software just to change the exhaust switchover tables in my chassis module. Same thing with the speedometer calibration on my truck. I literally need to change one byte of data to fix it. The Mitsubishi and Subaru communities were way more open about this stuff, and the hardware was a lot cheaper.
IF you have mag ride shocks they will be black and have a wire coming out of the top. You can see the wire under the hood. Standard shocks are yellow. If so, the rotary **** on the console will change throttle response, steering effort, damping (if equipped) and sound (if equipped) between drive modes. If you have performance exhaust there are 2 possible settings on the infotainment screen ON (link to drive mode) and OFF (track). Steering can be set to a specific mode or linked to drive mode.
In short - you need mag ride shocks to get any suspension damping adjustment.

Agreed... it seems very short sighted of GM to not offer the same software upgrades to previous owners provided the hardware is already in place.
My guess is more of a support issue. Its easier for a tech when working on a '14 to know feature X wasn't available then to be guessing if the owner applied a certain upgrade or not. However this is old school thinking... GM really needs to adapt to our modern world where customers expect to have the latest and greatest operating system or application loaded with just a click.

A lot of it's due to testing and validation. Like the 2018 gauge cluster upgrade. The cluster has a lot of Federally mandated safety critical stuff in it, and it's a big part of the car's security system. So any changes to it have to be tested for backwards compatibility to make sure it absolutely, positively, works correctly on prior years.
Adding the extra modes to the exhaust touches the HMI, BCM and chassis control modules. The CCM has ties into emissions related stuff, so again, it has a pretty low tolerance for stuff that doesn't work correctly. Same with the BCM. It's the heart of the anti-theft and keyless access systems.
Then there's the simple business case for giving people a reason to just buy the newer car.
I totally understand why GM doesn't do it. I just wish there was more of a community interested in figuring out how to do it ourselves. I've looked into it myself and it seems like most of the DIY stuff dead-ends with the LS1-era hardware.

Maybe I am just ignorant in the terminology, but by engine sound to you mean exhaust sound? Because mine does that by mode (programmable) I thought. Been a few years since I fiddled with it, but I could have sworn. Suspension too. And steering.
