Default Four post lift question

Just a quick curiosity question. I have seen four post lifts like the one below for a while now on the forum. I have a Quick Jack and love it. My question is: with a lift like the one in the picture, how do you lift the car to get the wheels and tires off??

Most 4-Post Lift companies offer what's called a sliding center jack - that slides up the middle to lift the car while up on the 4-post lift.

Or you put a plain-old-jack on the lift ramp.

It's a bridge jack. You really need two, and yes, you'll end up paying about what you did for the lift for two of them.

You could use your quickjack to lift the car for wheels and brake work. Unless of course, you are height restricted.

You cant do this like you are saying UNLESS YOU have the bridge metal piece to put a jack onto it. These rail will not wok due to having to get the jack under the car to the point of being safe to like the car up with braking the side piece's are the body panel under it.. Robert

I use the jacking bridge with low profile scissor jack and a tranny jack for TT and other central components.

I have a sliding steel tray similar to c5 Z16's above. I also have (2) 5' jack stands that expand to 8'. I slip the stands under one end. move the sliding tray in and put regular jacks stands under that. Then I move the long jacks stands to the other end and use the lift to move the car up to remove the wheels or whatever I need to work on. Have been doing this for 17 years without a problem or an incident.

You might want to consider a 2 post lift if you're going to be using it to work rather than storage. I'm building one now and that's what I decided to do.

I'd agree with you, I use my 4 post lift for storage and routine maintenance. It's not bolted down allowing me to move it around, but I'm not sure I'd want to upset the balance that much by dropping a major component - the manual has nothing but warnings on that king of thing.

If I drop a motor or transmission there will be a jack stand at the other end. I have 2 of the extra long ones for just such a situation. Not having it bolted down so you can move it is nice if you actually move it. I've had several friends with 4 post lifts that were movable and they all said they never moved it but it was nice to be able to. One thing I like about the Mohawk is that they have an attachment that will lift the car by the wheels. I didn't order it because it was over 2k but if I needed it for storage I probably would. I'm in the middle of building my shop right now, 60 x 60, and I think I'll have more than enough room without stacking cars.

I've never needed two. I use the bridge jack for almost everything, but I think a second one would end up getting in the way more often than not.

60x60 is the ultimate solution. But beware, the greater the space the greater the urge to fill it - at least in my case.

I think my wallet might run out of space before the garage does. lol. I got tired of having vehicles outside and having to go to a shop for tire changes. I found a nice coats 70x ah3 tire changer and a new Beissbarth balancer at a good deal so I can change my own tires. I've been using a local tire shop but I have to be there and seat the beads so I figured I might as well save my self some time and effort. I doubt I'll pay for the tools by doing it but who knows.

I'd be careful with those air bag jacks as they are inherently unstable and are fairly easy to tip over while inflated. There is a telescoping metal column in the center for support while the bags are inflated but it's unstable in the horizontal/lateral plane. I have a dual bag version and I will only use it with a car if it's on the floor and I definitely will not get under the car with it being the sole support.

They're good for changing tires but I wouldn't change the brakes without a jack stand with those things.
