DIC message "Rear Axle System Off" just popped up while driving. I could hear the sound of a pump whine from the trunk area.
Turned the car off and restarted. The message returned in about 30 seconds. I could again hear the pump whine. Two minutes later it was gone.
Several miles later it is still gone and no pump noise.
Any idea what this message means?
Message indicates a problem with the electronic rear differential. There is a control module that applies hydraulic pressure to engage the clutches as well as an oil circulating pump. However - rear axle messages also commonly happen when you have an old or weak car battery. Messages have also been seen when the alternator voltage regulator has failed and voltages are high.
You can see the hydraulic pump module underneath the left rear of the car. The oil cooler is in the right rear fender. Not sure where the oil pump is located but you can trace the lines between diff and cooler.
If you still have the original battery you should consider a new battery as the first step. Much beyond that will require GM scan tools to diagnose.
